About this listen
Exclusively from Audible
Set during the time of the Napoleonic Wars, this classic gives a satirical picture of a worldly society. The audiobook revolves around the exploits of the impoverished but beautiful and devious Becky Sharp who craves wealth and a position in society. Calculating and determined to succeed, she charms, deceives and manipulates everyone she meets.
A story of early 19th-century English society, it takes its title from the place designated as the centre of human corruption in John Bunyan's 17th-century allegory Pilgrim's Progress.
Receiving popular and critical success on first publication, the novel is considered Thackeray's masterpiece, and this satire of society is as relevant now as when it first appeared. In 2003, Vanity Fair was listed at Number 122 on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's best-loved books.
Thackeray was born in Calcutta in 1811. After his father's death, he was sent to be educated in England at five years old, while is mother remarried in India. The canings and abuses he received in private boarding schools formed a basis for some of his work as did the culture of Anglo-Indians which also featured prominently.

Magnificent Story Well Told
Follow the fortunes Rebecca and Emmy. One sweet, one wicked. Thackeray knows people. His character studies are a delight, think Chaucer with finesse and elegance. Very funny. Great romp through Napoleonic Europe too.

The memorable Becky Sharp, wit and satire
A fantastic reading by John Castle: entertaining and skillful, this audio-book reveals the accents and sardonic narratorial asides better than reading the book in print. Becky Sharp is one of the great characters of English literature: intelligent, talented, mesmerizing and manipulative. She runs rings around every man around her, outwitting and outperforming them.
While to modern sensibilities, Thackeray’s style may at times feel a bit wordy, listening to this audiobook makes it much easier to get into it (just as listening to Shakespeare is so much easier than reading it).
To the unobservant, some of the descriptions of women in the book may appear sexist, however Thackeray satirizes and lampoons men and women equally, both rich and poor. Nobody is spared his sharp wit, including himself.
This novel remains a masterpiece. It is intelligent, funny, entertaining and the characters are some of the most memorable in English literature. This reading is masterly, makes the book so much easier to read, and is highly recommended. This book is an utter delight.
