About this listen

The exclusive story of the greatest scientific breakthrough of the 21st century - the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine.

In mid-January 2020, scientists Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci learned of how a new virus that had emerged in Wuhan, China, was spreading. Recognising the threat at once, they dropped everything and committed themselves to developing a vaccine against the disease that would soon be known as COVID-19.

No one believed it was possible. But by December, the revolutionary BioNTech-Pfizer mRNA inoculation became the first clinically approved COVID-19 vaccine. Soon it was being injected into the arms of millions, turning the tide on the deadliest pandemic in living memory.

Vaccine is the story of this race against time. Written by Joe Miller, the Financial Times’ correspondent who covered the team’s COVID-19 project in real time, and based off more than 150 hours of interviews with Sahin and Türeci, as well with scientists, politicians, and public health officials, it offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes account of this extraordinary breakthrough.

Cutting-edge science that feels like a thriller, this is an historic account of the triumph of human endeavour in a time of adversity.

Includes exclusive interview with Joe Miller, Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci.

Much more interesting than I expected

Also informative! This has been written in such a consumable way for the average person, I learnt so much about vaccine development. Thank you!

Better than I first thought

I was ready to challenge my views thinking this was going to be about covid and anti-vaxers but surprised myself when listening to it, I felt I had learnt a great deal about Pfitzer, breast cancer and how research science is developed. Great listen.

Fascinating Chronicle of achievement

Fascinating and easy to read(listen to). great job explaining the science and the path to creating the vaccine. A real triumph of science. The story is told very well, it kept me interested the whole time. A great read and it also answers alot of questions

Inspired work of down to earth scientists

An uplifting, accurate and realistic recount of the story of the know known Pfizer Vax. I am convinced of the merits of their scientific research and rigour of their work.

Loved the story of dedicated people who are in it for the greater good, not driven by profits

This was surprisingly interesting for such a seemingly dry subject. It’s good to hear about dedicated scientists who are driven to do good and who are also wise enough to navigate the minefield of politics and the corporate world to realise the successful production of the first mRNA vaccine for Covid19. Also loved the interview of Urgur and Ozlem at the end. They may now be rich after being deeply in debt trying to develop the vaccine, but that’s not what drove them. They still don’t own a car or TV and still spend their days researching mRNA drugs to combat cancer and other major diseases

Fantastic and informative

An amazing true story. lots of insight into both the basic science of mRNA vaccines and the difficulties of commercialisation of a new product. One of my favourite audiobooks. Great narration, too

Effective propaganda

I am a few hours in on this and trying not to just delete it. Coming from a biomedical background I can see this book mixes real science with complete fabrication of reality.
Most will miss the errors as the story would receive 5 stars if it were not intending to be non-fictional.
I wonder if I get that far will the book reveal BioNTech went from a $450 million company to $8 billion in 3 years and make their main investor more than 10 billion (reference Forbes magazine).
If you are astute you will see this book for what it is!
