About this listen
“One of the difficulties of writing a critical biography of a living writer is that he changes while he is being written about.” (Floyd Dell, 1927)
This insightful and unsparing biography of Sinclair was written by Dell when Sinclair was 48 years old and in mid career. The spectacular success of The Jungle was behind him, and he had already become a world famous celebrity writer. Still, he had much left to say in his passionate pursuit of social justice.
The Great Depression was on it's way, just around the corner. The excesses of the Gilded Age drew the attention of Sinclair as he watched Moguls and Robber Barons live like European Royalty while workingmen and working women were struggling to get by on their meager pay, working in mines, mills, and factories. The Great War was over, and the Second World War had not yet started brewing.
The labor movement has begun to organize workers to assert their rights, demanding a fair day's pay for a fair day's work. The struggle between the Industrialists and their workers was violent and bloody. Upson Sinclair was an eyewitness to this struggle and a participant in some of it, getting arrested and going to jail twice.
The stories of Sinclair's personal struggles with his first wife, his family, and his health never held him back from speaking his truth. He went on to write books exposing the corruption in the newspapers, the church, the coal and oil industries, Wall Street, and the educational establishment. At the same time, he wrote novels (and plays) of love and life, and of marriage and divorce.
This is the only biography of Upton Sinclair written during his life and in the middle of his career. Later, he would write his autobiography (1960), and other biographies were written after his passing.
