About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Break free from anxiety and be free to live a full, happy life with internationally renowned psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr Judson Brewer - based on over 20 years of research and his simple habit-breaking programme.

We are living through one of the most anxious periods any of us can remember. Whether facing issues as public as a pandemic and political upheaval or as personal as having kids at home fighting the urge to reach for the wine bottle every night, we are feeling overwhelmed and out of control. But in this timely book, Judson Brewer explains how to uproot anxiety at its source using brain-based techniques and small hacks accessible to anyone.

We think of anxiety as everything from mild unease to full-blown panic. But it's also what drives the addictive behaviours and bad habits we use to cope (e.g. stress eating, procrastination, doom scrolling and social media). Plus, anxiety lives in a part of the brain that resists rational thought. So we get stuck in anxiety habit loops that we can't think our way out of or use willpower to overcome. Dr Brewer teaches us map our brains to discover our triggers, defuse them with the simple but powerful practice of curiosity and to train our brains using mindfulness and other practices that his lab has proven can work.

Distilling more than 20 years of research and hands-on work with thousands of patients, including Olympic athletes and coaches, and leaders in government and business, Dr Brewer has created a clear, solution-oriented programme that anyone can use to feel better - no matter how anxious they feel.

Simply superb

I loved this book. It is extremely helpful with step by step instructions on how habits form and how to use mindfulness as an anchor to change your brain’s relationship to maladaptive habits. 100% recommend.

Such a timely book

I am now into my 60’s and have read many books on such subjects. I love Dr Judd’s whole methodology and have just started Step 1. Listened through the whole book initially and gave now gone back to do the steps. I feel good about this one!!! And even my baby steps are already helping.

I have listened three times

I have found this so useful that I have listened to it three times. I have given the book to each of my three sisters. It’s interesting and inspiring. I have changed my behaviour as a result. Well with it.

Potentially helpful, but self indulgent

Overall this is a great audiobook. Personally I found the content to be a little too self indulgent; A lot of time spent on the author’s personal achievements and experiences, with less on useful facts and strategies. I would still recommend it to anyone looking for ways to cope with anxiety.

For those looking for the missing PDF!

I wasn't able to find it, but I was able to find an online version of the Behavioral Tendencies Quiz (BNQ) mentioned in Chapter 9 on Dr. Jud's website. https://drjud.com/quiz/

Hope this helps people who were as frustrated by this as I was :)

interesting but not that helpful

not bad if you're curious about the subject matter but not if you actually need help with mental illness

PDF?

Can anyone else not find the PDF file chapter 9 specifically says is included with this book?
The book itself is good so far, however I'm only at chapter 9 so I'll have to update my review when I finish (:
