About this listen
Harrison Baxter lives on a farm with his parents, on the outskirts of the village of Harmschapel. It's picturesque, idyllic, and tranquil - but Harrison is far from happy. His parent's marriage is strained, to say the least, and on top of that, his boyfriend, Daniel, has been mentally and physically abusing him for years. After he finds himself with one bruise too many, Harrison has had enough. But when he plucks up the courage to finally end his violent relationship, Harrison's life is changed forever when Daniel is found murdered in the most bizarre circumstances.
Detective Sergeant Blake Harte has moved to Harmschapel after his own relationship ended in tatters. But moving to a quiet village after working his way up the ranks in a city brings its own set of problems, and Blake soon finds himself at odds with new colleagues who aren't used to his style of policing. But when he is called upon to investigate the mysterious and impossible murder at Halfmile Farm, Blake finds himself facing the most challenging case of his career. So how can Daniel have been shot in a locked shed that nobody could possibly have escaped from?

An intriguing short mystery
What you’ll get: a somewhat short book about a gay cop who moves to a small country town and is faced with a very peculiar case. It has a good amount of mystery, excellent character concepts and backgrounds, with solid narration.
Sometimes mystery books are too long and drawn out. The pace of this is just about right.
Based on its length I wouldn’t be able to justify paying a full Audible credit for it, when compared with other books on offer. However, I give it 5 stars overall on its own merit.

A highly enjoyable cosy murder-mystery!
A highly enjoyable murder-mystery with the promise of romance later in the series. DS Blake Harte has left urban policing for the quiet village of Harmschapel after bad break up. While he’s valued for his results and expertise, his unorthodox methods ruffle a few feathers. Still living at home, Harrison Baxter is surrounded by the domestic violence between his parents and the violence meted out by his alcoholic boyfriend. Breaking up with his boyfriend leads to tragic consequences which cast suspicion on Harrison and his family. I liked this a lot, despite the sad topic of domestic violence. Blake and his new team are engaging coppers and Harrison’s tale had a nice twist. Don’t expect fireworks, Blake and Harrison find each other attractive but neither is in a fit state to start a relationship given recent and current events - this is a classic locked-room cosy mystery with a very slow burn. I don’t think I’ve come across UK actor Paul Woodson before, he performed the audio narration extremely well, just the right emotional notes (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue)!

Good listen
The first Robert Innes book I have listened to and it didn’t disappoint.
It is well written with a satisfying conclusion. The characters have been developed well and are interesting to learn about.
The only disappointing aspect of this book is the brevity of it. Being part of the Plus catalogue I can accept that, however had I paid $14.95 I would have been somewhat miffed.
The narrator does a good, not great job. He is easy to listen to and only has one mispronunciation, which is completely forgivable.
Yes, I do recommend this book.

Short but good story
Oct 2023: This is a book that's currently in the Plus catalogue, so available to download for no cost. It is around 4 hours long - which is around a third of the length of novels I usually listen to.
Even though it was an excellent police procedural, if I had paid for this, I would have been disappointed from a value for money point of view.
This was not a "gritty" story or one that goes into explicit post-mortem detail.
I will definitely be purchasing other DS Blake Hart novels - he is likeable: gets results, thinks outside the box, doesn't make assumptions but also makes errors of judgement at times.
