Ein Amtsrichter und sein Sohn erinnern sich an frühere Weihnachtsfeste, bei der ein Onkel den Knecht Ruprecht spielte. Nachdem dieser das Gedicht "mit tiefer Stimme" vorgetragen hatte, antwortete der Amtsrichter auf die Fragen nach den guten und schlechten Kindern: "Hat nur mitunter was trotzigen Mut! / Der Junge ist von Herzen gut". Doch Knecht Ruprecht ließ sich davon nicht beirren und schwang die Rute.
