About this listen

Broadcaster Jacinta Parsons was in her 20s when she first began to feel unwell - the kind of unwell that didn’t go away. Doctors couldn’t explain why, and Jacinta wondered if it might be in her head. She could barely function, was frequently unable to eat or get out of bed for days and gradually turned into a shadow of herself. Eventually she got a diagnosis: Crohn’s disease. But knowing this wouldn’t stop her life from spiralling into a big mess of doctors, hospitals and medical disasters.

What’s most extraordinary about Jacinta’s story is how common it is. Nearly half of Australians live with a chronic illness, but most of these conditions are not obvious, often endured in secrecy and little understood. They are unseen.

With compelling candour, Jacinta trains a microscope on the unique challenges of living with an invisible condition. She lays bare the struggles with shame, loss of identity, the threat of mortality and the profoundly complex relationships between the chronically ill and their own bodies, as well as with those around them. It’s a story of trying to fix an unfixable illness, getting beaten down then clawing back up and how that experience can shape a life.

The most gorgeous book I have ever read

Jacinta for PM. The honesty and rawness. I could barely keep my eyes dry. Thankyou

Brings light to the unseen

As a nurse of 3 decades I have mostly seen the acute illnesses that land people in hospital. The invisible, chronic, undiagnosed, unnameable, relentless illnesses that I barely knew existed until I got sick after a virus are poorly researched, funded or diagnosed/understood. Post viral fatigue, CFS/ME, dysautonomia, POTS, illnesses that pause a life in it’s tracks whether it be childhood/ teenage or adult life, are much more common that other neurological conditions yet receive the least funding.

I sobbed reading this as all the dark unspoken and unseen moments I have experienced were given a voice.

Well worth the price of admission

I loved this book so much. Jacinta's story is so big and her sharing of it will be undoubtedly appreciated for all sufferers of invisible illness and those who care for them. Listening to her narration was like listening to a friend telling me about things over several hundred cups of tea.
I highly recommend.

Brutally honest, but beautifully written

A much read for anyone who lives with chronic illness and those who are in their lives.

Insight into Crones Disease

Interesting to get a first hand account into a chronic illness. But the structure flipped around and the anecdotes about other chronic disease sufferers seem intrusive and unnecessary.
It broke the flow of the book.
