About this listen

Movie star 101: A smile hides all pain.

Quellcrist King has been playing a part his entire life. The more famous he becomes, the more he hides. The only person he ever let see the real him rose with him from nothing to the very top.

They were the king and queen of Hollywood - and then she wanted a divorce. The only way to survive his depression is to bury himself in work. If he can be a character, maybe he won't have to remember himself. A gay role can't be any different than playing a straight one, can it?

But instead of finding solace in the character, he finds it in his costar. Hale becomes his best friend, his lifeline, the light in his darkness. Quell is forced to examine everything he thought he knew about himself while filming intimate scenes with Hale that feel more real than anything ever has before.

He's lived his entire life following the script. What would life be like unscripted?

Contains mature themes.

well done depiction of medical depression and relationships

loved seeing healthy romance with solid boundaries demonstrated. it's hard being in a relationship with someone with depression but this story did an excellent job demonstrating how to set boundaries and expectations that help both people grow. as usual I found Joel's performance a little too much but I think that is my own preference and not a reflection on his skill.

Film scenes were great but fell flat overall!

A struggling actor, Hale is hopeful but realistic that he’s unlikely to get a part in the new gay pirate film that’s being cast. He’s not prepared to find himself reading across from the famed, charismatic star, Quellcrist King, let alone when he wins the main role of love interest to Quell’s character. The two men form a supportive friendship offscreen and Hale must stop himself from falling in love with his married, straight costar. Suffering from depression which has ramped up since his wife left him, Quell struggles with new feelings for Hale but he can’t seem to get out from under his celebrity wife’s demands.

This bisexual awakening / coming out romance had good bones. The scenes during filming were really interesting with loads of UST, Hale is a very sympathetic main character, and the side characters were great. I think the big problem for me was trying to understand why Quell kept acquiescing to all his estranged wife’s demands and why he didn’t initiate divorce proceedings a lot earlier. When he did finally make a stand, the repercussions were so non-existent, it undercut all the feet-dragging and hand-wringing. We were told repeatedly that the two men were best friends, but it was an unconvincing insta-friendship at best. The story ends very abruptly—not quite a cliffhanger, but things will obviously be tidied up in the next book—so be prepared for that. 🎧 Veteran voice actors John Solo (as Quell) and Joel Leslie (as Hale) were both excellent on the audio (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue)!
