About this listen

'Reading this felt like being at home - I didn't realise how much I masked. What an incredible book that I know will be re-read many times over.' - Dr Camilla Pang, author of Explaining Humans

'Unmasking Autism is at once a most deeply personal and scholarly account of the damage caused by autistic (and all) people leading masked lives, and how unmasking is essential to creating a self-determined, authentic life... This is a remarkable work that will stand at the forefront of the neurodiversity movement.' - Dr Barry M. Prizant, author of Uniquely Human

'A powerful argument for radical self-acceptance applicable to all readers.' - Los Angeles Times

'An essential roadmap for autistic people to be themselves.' - NPR

'Price's accessible and compassionate writing shines, and readers will feel encouraged to embrace a new understanding of themselves. Its potential to help masked autistic adults, especially those from systemically marginalized backgrounds, makes this book essential for most collections.' - Library Journal (starred review)

Have you, a friend or family member been living with undiagnosed autism?

For every visibly Autistic person you meet, there are countless 'masked' people who pass as neurotypical. They don't fit the stereotypical mould of Autism and are often forced by necessity to mask who they are, spending their entire lives trying to hide their Autistic traits. In particular, there is evidence that Autism remains significantly undiagnosed in women, people of colour, trans and gender non-conforming people, many of whom are only now starting to recognise those traits later in life.

Blending cutting-edge research, personal insights and practical exercises for self-expression, Dr Devon Price examines the phenomenon of 'masking', making a passionate argument for radical authenticity and non-conformity. A powerful call for change, Unmasking Autism gifts its readers with the tools to uncover their true selves and build a new society - one where everyone can thrive on their own terms.

The Title says it all

Autism is a diagnosis that has been traditionally diagnosed according to dominant culture. White men. Autism looks different across cultures and across gender and minority groups and this book explains that well. We need a new diagnosis tool that covers multiple forms of Autism. And we need a more accessible diagnosis system - one that is not dependent on socio-economic status. And then, we need a more inclusive society in which people can be themselves without fear of mistreatment or judgement.

As an autistic, I liked this book

I'm very glad I read this book, it helped see Autism with a different perspective, which I really appreciate. Personally I didn't relate to most of the autism symptoms mentioned in this book, the author often says Autistic people behave or feel a certain way, when actually only some autistics are like that while other autistics are often the complete opposite. But in terms of giving the author's genuine authentic experiences, this book did a great job 👌

Loved it!

I'm a psychologist and I recommend this book to my autistic clients and their parents. What a great and compassionate manifesto for authenticity, self acceptance and anti-oppressive approach to mental health practice. I hope Devon continues to write more in the future 🙏❤️🤞

brilliant

Since becoming self recognised autistic in my early 40's I have read A LOT of books. this is HANDS DOWN the best! Affirming, validating and inspiring, but most of all the understanding and knowledge it gave me about myself is incredible!

Powerful and deeply useful

As a recently identified autistic person, this book couldn’t have come at a more perfect time for me. Devon lays things out with such specificity and care that made it so easy to listen to. Heavily laden with information and useful exercises but never overwhelming or difficult to follow. Its helped my process of slowly coming to terms with what might be hidden under so many years of unconscious masking, but this book also helped me realise the aspects of myself I have already been able to start unmasking intuitively (through working to manage life with my existing neurological and mental conditions without worrying about societal expectations) This first time around I listened through the whole thing in just three days, so I will be going back for a slower round and more intentionally working myself through all the exercises. I look forward to benefitting even more from this book with time, and thank Devon for this wonderful tool.

Fantastically affirming

Loved this neurodiversity affirming, informative, caring and empowering piece of work. Devon navigated everything with sensitivity, and was clear in the intention to acknowledge and embrace intersectionality. I also loved that Devon provided the narration for their work and also provided the exercises and resources in an accompanying pdf.

Wow..

As someone recently diagnosed, and an adult, this book has been absolutely amazing. I've learnt a lot, and not just that but it was enjoyable, relatable and wasn't difficult to sit through what so ever.
