About this listen
Darren Hayes was always a storyteller. As a child, in suburban Queensland in the 1970s, he told himself he was going to be a pop star - and he did it. Throughout Savage Garden's astonishing success - which included multiple Australian number 1s, cracking the US charts and selling more than 35 million albums worldwide - he kept telling us stories of love and longing, through his vulnerable, open song lyrics.
But the reality of his life was much more complicated than the constraints of a three-minute pop song.
In Unlovable, for the first time, Darren recounts the events and circumstances that shaped his unique life: from the childhood trauma of growing up with a violent, alcoholic father, his journey with depression, to the dizzying heights of worldwide fame in Savage Garden, and everything in between.
Told in his own lyrical words, Unlovable is a magical dark fairytale that reclaims the terrors and obstacles of his past to reveal the fabulous artist he has become.

What a beautiful story of resilience
I have such a deeper respect for the author after listening to his life story so far. I always loved his music but knew nothing about his life.
I’m struggling to put into words just how moved I am by listening. Definitely a must listen/ read

Heartbreaking, raw, irreplaceable!
Another triumph for Darren Hayes. I was completely captivated from end to end, by the tragic and exciting life he has lived so far. Darren’s memoir is essential in the discussion about violence against women, bullying, gay youth, and mental health.
From spectacular impressions of Stevie Nicks, to the darkest, most terrifying moments of his life. Star Wars, Michael Jackson, and the tragic meaning behind his masterpiece “Two Beds & a Coffee Machine”. You won’t be disappointed!!

Incredibly Moving
Incredibly moving and honest account of a at times very dark lived human experience. You don't even need to know about Savage Garden/Darren Hayes to connect to this deeply personal memoir.

Anyone experiencing DV - read this book! 🩷
If you have experienced DV and want to feel less alone, or that thriving after trauma is possible - read this book. Also a ‘it gets better’ tale for any queer kids out there. Of course fans of Savage Garden will enjoy the stories behind the scenes, but this memoir is so much more than that.

A life of a sweet soul.
Highly recommend, an insightful journey. Highs, lows and everything in between. Love the hybrid accent. Hoping for part 2 of an incredible life in years to come.

A "Truely, Madly, Deeply" must read.
Darren Hayes digs deep and exposes the flaws that so many of us have, or can at least relate with. His honest shared experiences and hidden brilliance makes me love him even more. I certainly enjoyed this memoir and would highly recommend it to any Savage Garden fan. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Raw, deep, confronting and enlightening
Thankyou for sharing Darren, your experiences helped me not only understand the deeper meaning behind your music and music that shaped me growing up, but also helped me understand my own family and a father that tried so hard to break the cycle without so much as telling us much about what it was like. Forever grateful.
