Publisher's Summary
Darren Hayes was always a storyteller. As a child, in suburban Queensland in the 1970s, he told himself he was going to be a pop star - and he did it. Throughout Savage Garden's astonishing success - which included multiple Australian number 1s, cracking the US charts and selling more than 35 million albums worldwide - he kept telling us stories of love and longing, through his vulnerable, open song lyrics.
But the reality of his life was much more complicated than the constraints of a three-minute pop song.
In Unlovable, for the first time, Darren recounts the events and circumstances that shaped his unique life: from the childhood trauma of growing up with a violent, alcoholic father, his journey with depression, to the dizzying heights of worldwide fame in Savage Garden, and everything in between.
Told in his own lyrical words, Unlovable is a magical dark fairytale that reclaims the terrors and obstacles of his past to reveal the fabulous artist he has become.

A life of a sweet soul.
Highly recommend, an insightful journey. Highs, lows and everything in between. Love the hybrid accent. Hoping for part 2 of an incredible life in years to come.

You won’t be disappointed
This book tells the story of Darren’s life from his earliest memory to present day, telling the story of his childhood traumas must of been hard yet so brave, he tells of the reasons behind some of his song. I have been a fan of Darren’s for 27 years and it was so nice to get more of a glimpse of what his life was/is like . The way Darren tells the story is so moving.

Raw, Honest and Inspiring.
Darren Hayes takes you on a journey through his complex, difficult and yet, also magical life story. He explores his place in this world whilst learning to love himself. As a fellow victim of domestic violence, with family members that are a part of the LGBTQI+ community, it was at times hard to hear what he has been exposed to and how he has struggled throughout his life... However I applaud him for exploring these difficult issues with compassion and raw honesty. I know he's helped myself and will help many others struggling with our own life experiences and trauma related to these subjects. Finding our place in the world while we deal with past trauma, bullying, homophobia, misogyny and complex PTSD. His music has always been a source of fun, comfort, ecstacy and solace to me. Now through hearing about his life I can understand why this is so. There are so many shared experiences, nostalgic memories of growing up in the 80's in Australia, the innocence, the joy of the music we listened to and the freedom we had as children before social media existed. This is a truly heartfelt and uplifting life story, written by a man that has given so much to so many people of himself. I truly hope he understands the gift he, his music and this book are to the world and he finds comfort knowing the profound affect he's had on so many lives? Thank you Darren.
