About this listen
Heart disease is the number-one killer in the world. Despite ever-advancing medical procedures and more powerful pharmaceutical drugs, the rate of heart disease continues to rise. According to Dr. Stephen Hussey, this is due in part to misunderstandings about how the heart really functions and how to keep it healthy. These misunderstandings result in improper medical approaches and off-target intervention therapies.
As a type 1 diabetic, Dr. Hussey has always known that he was at two to four times greater risk of developing heart disease. As a result, he has dedicated his entire adult life to understanding the heart, to prevent himself from becoming a statistic. And then his worst nightmare came true. Dr. Hussey suffered a “STEMI,” a blockage in the left anterior descending artery of his heart. STEMIs are typically so fatal that they are known as “widowmakers.” Only twelve percent of those who experience them outside of a hospital setting survive. Dr. Hussey was among the lucky twelve percent, but faced a difficult decision during his recovery: follow the standard of care laid out for him by the attending cardiologist or politely decline and apply everything he’d learned about the heart to a recovery protocol that would look massively different than what the doctors were recommending. In Understanding the Heart, Dr. Hussey shares the information that guided him through the highest-stakes decision of his life.

An interesting counter argument to modern CVD
I enjoyed this book and felt that a majority of the arguments are respectable and worth further research. However I did find some things to be stated like fact when really they are a theory at best (4th phase water). I feel that more people would benefit from reading these ideas but need to maintain a healthy degree of skepticism when reading this as well as all “science” on health.

Veneer of science
Many radical theories are propsed, with very weak evidence. The author Claims 4th phase flow causes the blood to flow and the heart doesn't pump blood but restricts it's flow. (Then why is blood pressure lower in the Vena Cava than in the Aorta? why have elastic artieries evolved?) I don't doubt the author has read a smattering of journal articles and books, he cites a few studies, but intellectual rigor is not respected. He is very open to new ideas, so that's one part of what is necessary for science advance, but he doesn't look to disprove his own beliefs. The author states that he thinks try to fully understand the mechanisms of the human body is futile, preferring to rely on experience if a treatment "works" for him (unclear how this n of one is measured, I guess it's just "feeling better"?) The huge leaps to radical conculsions are truly death defying. However defying death is one thing this author will not be doing: his wrong opinions about cholesterol and keto diets have already caused him one heart attack. I am worried for his health, and for the "patients" tricked into the care of this quack.
