About this listen
Zombies are real. And we made them. Are you prepared for the zombie apocalypse? The Smith family is, with the help of a few marines.
When an airborne "zombie" plague is released, bringing civilization to a grinding halt, the Smith family, Steven, Stacey, Sophia, and Faith, take to the Atlantic to avoid the chaos. The plan is to find a safe haven from the anarchy of infected humanity. What they discover, instead, is a sea composed of the tears of survivors and a passion for bringing hope.
For it is up to the Smiths and a small band of Marines to somehow create the refuge that survivors seek in a world of darkness and terror. Now with every continent a holocaust and every ship an abattoir, life is lived under a graveyard sky.

Not even sure how this series is legal
The story itself is interesting and the performance is great. A caveat is that I'm up to book 3 and I'm debating if I can keep listening. The main issue is the author's fascination with sexualizing underage girls. Clear sexual harassment of 13/15 years old's being normalized is just strange. A chapter where a group of adults debate and then pressure a 17 & 13-year-old to have sex is ostensible "Medically justified", but it still feels completely out of place and for lack of a better word "cringe". It's like the author either has some weird fascination with such things or has made some very misguided attempts to world-build by demonstrating the regression of social norms. If it is the latter, it is very poorly done. Many of the characters are caricatures of normal people, which removes some sense of realism.
My opinion of the author, based solely on this, is the antithesis of what his Wikipedia biography indicates, besides the fact he served in the United States military, which is not surprising.
Should you read/listen to it?
I wouldn't recommend the series to anyone under 18. The story itself (minus what's previously mentioned), is rather engaging. I struggle between enjoying the story and being kind of disgusted by it. It's not a waste of time to listen to, but do so at your own risk.

Not for Aussies.
Good story, main character has worst attempt at Aussie accent ever. Probably bearable if you aren't Australian. Also dad being pronounced da is driving me nuts.
