About this listen

Throughout my life I have done things my way, and they have always worked out - as if I've had luck in my corner. Of course there were challenges along the way, but these were always dealt with head-on and produced great results. This approach brought me around the globe: living from Tel Aviv to London to Tokyo to Jakarta to Buenos Aires; from Wall Street to Main Street to Midaq Alley; from an apartment on Fifth Avenue to living out of my car. No matter what, I was “all in.” This approach has brought me both failures and successes, including a once-thriving business.

All of my optimism and bravado came to a crashing halt one cold December holiday night, when after an evening out with good friends, I suffered an accident. I was beaten with a pipe and later found under a moving train, resulting in quadriplegia. Given virtually no chance to walk again, I was devastated. But I also had hope, and lots of it. A fire that exists deep within, and has since childhood, burns on no matter the circumstances. I am here for a bigger mission. What would that mission now be?

Nothing could have prepared me for what was to come. Every part of my life - emotional, physical, mental, spiritual, financial, including family and friend relationships, suffered. Still, not 10 seconds of pity passed through me while I lay on that gurney in a cold, dark, sterile hall in the trauma center, with a priest's hand on my arm; I was determined to recover, to heal.

This sense of optimism was supported by a deep inner belief that all things in life are impermanent, and no matter how bad it was, it too would eventually pass. Having a background as an entrepreneur, I organized and operated my recovery as a business, down to a daily spreadsheet that had my time split into 15-minute segments. This process changed me in deep, introspective ways, allowing me to get in touch with my heart - with compassion for myself and others.

As a result, today I am a changed man; a new person, reborn into a new body. I embarked on a journey of recovery and healing that brought me through great pain and darkness, a result of looking deep within for the bigger answers related to who I am and what my purpose is here, only brought home through God’s grace and the sweet song of having touched my inner-self-soul. After years of grueling physical therapy, I am also now learning to take steps again. There is no doubt in my mind, I will walk and run again. My body is sure to follow.

If you or someone you know has suffered a life trauma, or if you are part of medical or support staff, a friend or family of someone going through a life-changing experience, then this experiential guidebook will help you to understand what questions to ask, the obstacles that the traumatized will face, and how best to proceed and support recovery and healing. Written as a narrative, the guidebook is in the form of a story you will very much share and enjoy along the way.

A focus on recovery and a great read all round

A handbook and great guide for anyone who has suffered a life changing injury or has been stricken by disease and are looking to recover with grace and efficiency. Steven's story of recovery and healing is inspirational and educational all at once. The narration is absolutely second to none and the book is very well written. A real focus on the ins and outs of recovery and also jam packed with very practical solutions and ideas that will aid in the process of healing. Would recommend for general reading and listening just for the story and I would also strongly recommend this work to people who might find themselves in a similar situation as Steven did all those years back.

Inspiring

Start the new year off with something great to listen to with ‘Unbreakable Mind.’

I met the great man Steven Quigley in Amsterdam 6 years ago and his first action upon meeting me was to see if I was okay. Being injured myself, I truly believe Steven Quigley is a name that should be known globally as he has so much to teach the world. This book is just the start!

When you get the chance to meet an amazing human, the moment can slip by very quickly. LUCKILY for me, Steven persisted with talking to me (as he could see I was in need of some help) and we will now be great friends for life!

Once I sat down and had a conversation with Steven, I quickly realised this man is incredible. He is in a wheelchair, travelling the world solo while spreading love, light and peace. No negativity, all positive. Helping anyone he could along the way. This man truly amazed me, so when he said he was writing a book, I knew it would one day become an important part of my recovery.

I also want to share an experience from that 2018 Amsterdam trip to further show people the character of this great writer.

Steven meets Norbert: It was a privilege to see this amazing bond being formed between Steven and Norbert (who truly deserved to turn his life around as he has such a BIG heart). That BIG heart only needed to see some good in humanity, which Steven showed Norbert time and time again. Spending time with just the two of them was a great chance to see the bond grow, and help me understand the meaning of Altruism. Yes, it is easy to hand someone a small amount of money and feel good about yourself, feel like you are genuinely helping somebody get through the week. What Steven has taught me is how small of a gesture giving that money really is, and that the love, respect and support is the true gift here. Overtime, Steven has helped Norbert incredibly, enabling him to change his way of thinking and completely turn his life around. From living on the streets to having a job and a roof over his head, it really shows what genuine love can do to any human’s life.

All this from a wheelchair – one of many reasons why I call Steven Quigley an amazing human! Norbert and I are very fortunate to have met this man. Had it not happened, I may have not made it home to Australia. Thank you for being you brother. It was an incredibly challenging time in my life, and your daily love, support and guidance was amazing. Since 2018 Steven has regularly checked up on me even after not getting replies for months. The man has so much wisdom and good energy to spread, so if you are in need of some inspiration, start with ‘Unbreakable Mind.’
