Publisher's Summary
This is a story of Jelena Dokic's survival. How she survived as a refugee twice. How she survived on the tennis court to become world number four. But, most importantly, how she survived her father, Damir Dokic, the tennis dad from hell.
From war-torn Yugoslavia to Sydney to Wimbledon, she narrates her hellish ascent to becoming one of the best tennis players in the women’s game, the abuse she endured at the hands of her father and her heartbreaking fall from the top. Jelena never told anyone the full truth of what she went through until now, and her unbreakable spirit will inspire you.

An unforgettable read
This book was incredibly difficult to put down. It was well written by Jelena and smoothly narrated by Kellie. Jelena showed readers that she is very much so a survivor and a beautiful, determined young woman who finds happiness in all she pursues. I will be recommending this to all my bookloving friends and family!

Fantastic insight into Jelena's life
Jelena did not have an easy life. She tells the story with such honesty and rawness, explaining it by one physical beating at a time. Raised by parents who had their own issues, and a father who was violent, self absorbed (potentially narcissistic/psychopathic - or was he a victim of his own upbringing by parents who were also emotionally lacking? Definately damaged in some way. I found a lot of the first portion of the book was hard to listen to. Lots of beatings and insults, while her father moulded her into the tennis champion, the breadwinner for the family. Nothing was enough for her father - no amount of wins, money or the highest ranking. Despite all this you can tell she has come out strong and that she does not hate her father. Its sad to see the kids of abusive parents still long for that parent to be normal, still want to reason with them in the face of their difficult personalities. . I loved the narrator - she had a youthful voice and you can get the emotions and humour conveyed in Jelena's story. How someone can have gone through all this in their early life and still be sane is amazing. I really enjoyed this book even though I was shaking my head or had my mouth open at some of the stories!

An Amazing Woman
This is an emotional & riveting story of an incredibly strong, mentally tough woman. I have always been fascinated with Jelena. Not the controversy but the athlete & person. I am so glad that she had the strength to write this book. She asks not for sympathy but for understanding. My emotion was admiration & inspiration. If I was ever to be able to meet Jelena Dokic in person ... it would truly be one of the great moments in life.

Wow what a life
Kept on the edge of my seat. The drama the hurt the cries the sorrow the why is she still with her dad or wanting to be with her dad. Used and abused for her talent and money. Much respect for her. As a migrant not refugee in the same era I was subjected to hate, discrimination etc. australia was racist at this time and it probably still is

Gripping. Poignant. Hopeful.
A well written memoir by Jelena Dokic.
Jelena takes the reader on a journey thru her traumatic childhood, the devastation of her father Damir, the difficulty of culture clashes and her amazing perseverance to rise above the cruel violence inflicted upon her throughout this period of her young life.
Narration is pleasant and inflective.
I hope Jelena writes a follow up memoir.

Courageous
Jelena is such a remarkable young woman to have endured the most horrific abuse from her father yet find the courage to push on even through her darkest days.
