Før krigen var Louis langdistanceløber, og han deltog i OL i Berlin i 1936. Efterfølgende var målet OL i Tokyo i 1940. Det blev som bekendt aldrig til noget, og det blev som krigsfange, at Louis kom til Japan.
Det bedste er egentlig at høre "Ukuelig" uden nogen forhåndsviden om, hvad der sker efter styrtet, og blot lade sig forføre af Hillenbrands formidable fortælleevne. Dog skal man være forberedt på, at bedst som man tror, at nu kan det ikke blive værre, så bliver det faktisk værre. Men for at give lytteren en smule ro i sjælen skal det siges, at Louis først døde den 3. juli 2014. Mod, livsvilje og udholdenhed gennemsyrer Louis' liv, og han er ukuelig på et næsten ubegribeligt plan.
