About this listen
At 38, Zavier “Cade” McCade has it all: a military career he can be proud of, a successful business, and a close-knit group of family and friends. A former Army Special Forces captain, Cade leaves the military to create Custos Securities, a burgeoning protection agency that provides unparalleled security for both civilians and corporations across the US.
After a string of disastrous relationships - and a narrow escape from an abusive partner - Braden Cross is finally putting his past to rest. Combining both his passion for baking and his knack for business, Braden owns the Sugar n' Spice Cafe with his best friend, who concocts exotic coffees and teas that pair perfectly with his decadent confections.
When a stalker sets his sights on Braden, the young pastry chef's world is turned upside down. More frightened than he cares to admit and not knowing where to turn, Braden is relieved when Cade steps in to offer his protection. Caught up in a maelstrom of threats, break-ins, and vandalism, the two draw closer together.
Braden eventually realizes he can trust Cade with his life, but he finds himself wondering...can he trust him with his heart?
Contains mature themes.

The good, the bad, and the annoying!
A total line ball for me, there were things I loved and things that grated. Decorated military veteran 38 yo Zavier ‘Cade’ McCade co-owned Custos Security and agrees to take on the protection of 28 yo baker Braden Cross who is being stalked, most probably by a violent ex-boyfriend. Within a day, Cade falls heavily for Braden and their blossoming relationship enrages the stalker to dangerous levels. Once bitten, twice shy, Braden doesn’t want another controlling man and Cade’s powerful physical presence and his penchant for domination in the bedroom rings alarm bells. Can Braden trust him or he is just jumping out of the frying pan and into Cade’s fire?
The positives: I loved the contrasting dynamic between Cade and Braden - the age-gap, the size- and power-differences. I loved Braden’s totally understandable relunctance to trust Cade or talk about the abuse he had suffered. I also loved the high-tension action scenes, they were really compelling. Tristan James does a good job on the audio narration.
The negatives: it seemed too unbelievable and unprofessional for Cade to fall into instalove and constantly touch Braden from Day 1. Cade constantly wanted to talk feelings and relationships, he just didn’t feel like a believable male character. Braden makes an incredibly bad choice that puts himself in danger, so frustrating! Abrupt cliffhanger ending manipulated me into getting the next book - I hate it when the works on me! 🫣 (the first three audios are currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue)

Very annoying ending
I initially really enjoyed this story but as it progressed, it kind of felt really drawn out. No spoilers, but when the long-time coming event finally hits, it seems really implausible given the story has long built up the skills and ability of all these ex-military guys (plus more who are hackers, and a brief mention along the way that they are friends with the Chief of Police). Despite all this, the ‘event’ still happens AND this ex-military team are still unable to resolve the event. The answer is literally given to them by the bad guy. I mean…. c’mon.
I also didn’t realise this story ended on a cliffhanger of sorts. I really wouldn’t have bothered reading it if I knew it continued into a second book. The story literally could have easily been wrapped up with one more chapter. I can’t help feeling the second book will be another drawn out thing. No thanks!
