About this listen
Peter Carey's stunning, Booker Prize-winning novel about Australia's most famous outlaw.
As he flees the police, Ned Kelly scribbles his narrative in semiliterate but magically descriptive prose. To his pursuers he is a thief and a murderer. To his own people he's a hero for opposing the English. Ned, who saw his first prison cell at 15, has become the most wanted man in the wild colony of Victoria, taking over towns and defying authority.
Here is a classic outlaw tale, made alive by the skill of a great novelist. There are no sentences like these in all Australian literature, and yet they could only have grown from our soil.

Perfection
Incredible from start to finish, this is my favourite audio book yet. The narrator more than manages to do this poetic and stunningly captivating book justice.

Incredible
This is literature at its best. Wonderful narration and an absolutely gripping Australian story. Carey is so good at capturing character and the Australian ethos, with such limited, but at time beautiful, prose.

Fantastic book
Great book, cleverly written and crafted. Read well. I wonder if it would have been for an Irish Australian narrator. I do love that accent, and seems to be Carey's intent re voice.

A true modern Aussie classic
I'm really glad I finally got around to this modern Australian classic.
Carey's characterisation of Ned Kelly is gripping and inspires empathy for the lower class of the early white settlement of the colony of Victoria. As is the sign of a great historical fiction novel about real-life figures, it had me stopping along the way to research the people, places and events to discern what was fiction & what was history.
Gianfranco Negroponte's narration absolutely fantastic, matching the pace and emotion needed for each scene.

Most adjectival special
An important story, with lasting significance. Peter has built a fine vessel for this important history. No lack of entertainment along the way. Many thanks.
