About this listen

I know what a true travesty of justice is - from personal experience.

In March of 2003, while still struggling with an alcohol addiction, I was arrested for a DUI - and my life was turned completely upside down for the next two and half years.

You'd have thought I'd committed murder.

Before I continue, please allow me to let the listener of this story know that yes, I fully understand the possible consequences of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated; I could have killed myself - and other innocent drivers and their family members. I do understand why the law is so tough on drunk drivers and habitual offenders.

But in my case, nobody was hurt. Except me, that is. Over the next two and half years, I would become almost a permanent fixture at the Knox County jail, an escaped inmate on the loose, and would even be placed in prison before it was over - for a first-time offense - and because they had tired of messing with me from a financial point of view.

Welcome to our justice system.
