Publisher's Summary
Sometimes danger comes from the most unexpected places.
Gwen Proctor has always been willing to do anything it takes to protect her kids. But there are some things even she can’t protect them from. When a violent incident at Connor’s school brings the press to Gwen’s doorstep, she agrees to take a case out of town hoping to keep her family out of the crushing media spotlight.
The case is that of a missing girl, last seen getting into a truck with a stranger before disappearing. Gwen has a reputation for finding those who are lost, but this time something is wrong. Her instincts are off, and every clue she uncovers only raises more doubts, not just about the missing girl and the circumstances of her disappearance, but also about the fragile safety Gwen’s created for her family.
The closer she comes to uncovering the truth, the more she unwittingly puts those she loves at risk. Someone from Gwen’s past doesn’t appreciate the new life she’s built for herself and is willing to do anything it takes to tear it apart. Except this time it isn’t Gwen in the crosshairs, but her partner Sam. Without her instincts to rely on, how can Gwen protect those she loves against an enemy she never sees coming?

Finally, another installment!
I just found out (at the end if this audio book actually) that Rachel Caine passed away many years ago, which probably explains why there was a bit of a delay with this title being released in here. It also makes me feel a little guilty saying that it didn't quite live up to my memory of the other entries in the series. I loved finally getting to hear all my favourite characters again - and it's hard not getting attached to the these characters - but I also felt like there were a few (subtle) flaws to this story. There was no big twist and the "bad guys" were all evident from the beginning. The characters constantly talk about being paranoid and overly use technology to their advantage, but then fail to use it at times it could actually help (likely because that would spoil the plot). There was actually one point I think there may have been an error regarding the phones being in two places at once, but I potentially heard that wrong. And while I think Emily Sutton Smith is the perfect narrator for this series and nails each voice constantly, I felt like there were a few slips in this one where she used the wrong voice or her voice was suddenly worn out and sounded like a different character by mistake.
Still worth the listen though, especially if you've already heard the earlier titles.
