Publisher's Summary

Most people have to work for years to achieve their ultimate goal. Be it wealth, status, or power, nothing comes in a single day. For Edison Elder, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. On the night of his Awakening, Edison was originally delighted to discover that he was chosen by the Beings, a mysterious race of all-powerful and inquisitive creatures, to form a Deal and become a Player. Becoming a Player would allow him to take part in the Game, a solution imposed by the Beings to stop wars, and bring his family out of poverty. However, his joyous moment was ripped from his hands as the Being offers him an ultimatum: extreme power in exchange for his own death.

Faced with the prospect of hard labor for the rest of his life or his own death, Edison chooses the third option. He completes his Deal, but now he needs to face the consequences. An innocent is dead, the king is in a panic, and Edison finds himself permanently crippled.

Edison, along with Ralph and Anna, his newly formed team of Players, need to travel across the kingdom and discover who killed the prince. However, someone is manipulating them from behind the scenes, and Edison’s powers prove to be far more sinister than he had ever expected. As the group trudge onwards in their quest, they will need to deal with not only the growing enemies Edison leaves in his wake, but also his unfortunately timed sense of morality.
