About this listen

Jack Ryan returns in a blockbuster new novel of action, thrills and intrigue in the No.1 bestselling world created by master storyteller Tom Clancy.

For decades, Taiwan has been a thorn in the side of the Chinese government. New Chinese President Li Jian Jun is done fooling around. He's devised a secret military operation to take the island. Only one man knows how to stop Li's bloody plan for reunification: Minister of Defense Qin Haiyu. Fearing for his life and the safety of his family, Qin covertly makes contact with the CIA in Beijing and signals his desire to defect to the West.

To get Qin out, John Clark creates an international task force reminiscent of Rainbow Six and goes undercover in mainland China. Meanwhile, Lt. Commander Katie Ryan is deployed to the tip of the spear on the destroyer USS Jason Dunham to defend Taiwan. Threatened by an encircling Chinese armada, she's under pressure to find a flaw in the invaders' plan for her father to exploit.

For his part, President Jack Ryan may have the power of the entire US military at his disposal, but what he really needs are Li's secret plans from Defense Minister Qin so he can stave off a war. Because America's Defense Protocol could lead to a game of mutual destruction that could cost the lives of thousands of young soldiers, sailors, special operators . . . and his daughter.

Really excited this book

Great story, was hooked very fast and as per usual Scott Brick's narration was perfect.

Great read

I very much enjoyed this book. Both the writer and the narrator are top storytellers.

Good scenarios

Unfortunately becoming too rah rah. Too much macho “we are the greatest” stuff. It feels like filler between narrative elements. Clancy was very focused on detail and objective analysis of capabilities and less obsessed with the supremacy of any American operatives. There’s a bit of super hero culture creating into a genre that once captivated our imagination.
Feels to me like cheap and easy writing to satisfy egos and hubris, far from the Clancy idea.
I don’t think I will be listening to any further stories here. Pity. It think the new writers don’t actually understand the magic of TC’ s original stories, or have been directed by publishers and others to extract value from a particular audience… sad…
Maybe that is why the estate of John Le Carre has never offered the ghost writers an option…
To be clear I’ve listened/read all of them. I’m not a newcomer.
Cheers!

Poor Australian accent

I enjoy Scott's narration but if you can't do an Aussie accent correctly please don't even try.
Story was great.

A great story but lacks a little action

I’m a big fan of Tom Clancy, however, the writing hasn’t been as good since he passed away. Andrew and Wilson are probably the best of everybody who has attempted to land in his footsteps. It’s a great story, my only criticism are that it lacks action as there is lots of political rhetoric and it’s fairly predictable and at times a little cheesy American backslapping. Definitely worth a read but not the best you’ll find.

Good read.

Enjoyed the book. Fast paced. Interesting subject and thought provoking scenarios. Found the narration difficult to enjoy, angst ridden throughout.
