About this listen

FOR JACK RYAN, THE GREATEST THREAT LURKS BENEATH THE WAVES . . . AGAIN

When a Russian superweapon is let loose under the waves, it's up to President Jack Ryan to find a countermove in the latest entry in this #1 New York Times bestselling series.

US intelligence is reporting turmoil in the Russian navy. Their deadliest submarine, the Belgorod, has unexpectedly launched. Who authorised the departure? What mission is it on? And, most disturbing of all, what weapons do the giant doors on the sub's bow hide?

It's been four decades since a similar incident with the Soviet sub, Red October, ended happily, thanks to a young CIA analyst named Jack Ryan.

Now, President Jack Ryan finds himself with fleets of ships, squadrons of jets, and teams of SEALs at his command, but what he doesn't have is insight into the plans of the Belgorod's commander. It falls to a younger generation of Ryans to do the dangerous work that will reveal that information.

But there's always a price to be paid. When the final moments tick away, will Jack Ryan have to choose between the safety of his country and the safety of his child?

Great to have new authors in the drivers seat

I enjoyed this a lot more than the last few books in the series. Not sure how many more members from this high achieving family can end up being world class spooks, but they pulled it off on this occasion.
Lots of nods to Red October but nothing too cheesy.
A good addition to the Jack Ryan series.

The younger generation

The story itself. We are reading about his children now and the careers they have chosen for themselves. It is hard to put it down once you start.

Well written plot

As a passionate aficionado of ebooks and a devoted follower of both Jack Ryan senior and junior novels, I believe that Andrews and Wilson have truly honored Tom Clancy with this latest work. The plot was captivating, particularly in its exploration of Katie Ryan's evolution as an intelligence officer. The meticulous inclusion of naval protocols and procedures lent a palpable sense of authenticity to the narrative. Furthermore, the meticulous attention to detail further enhanced the credibility of the characters and storyline.

Fantastic story with fantastic narration

A brilliantly paced story that gets you in with great characters, suspense, action and a bit of political intrigue rolled in.
The narration is brilliant and just the right tone and Tom Clancy would be both proud and impressed with the job done by Andrew’s and Wilson.
Definitely worth a read!

Little too much US hubris and “pride”

Great yarn marred by too much “we are the greatest” and back slapping. Original novels struck more to factual details and less emotional dialogue, especially in scenes of high action and focus. In those times the pros would have stuck to facts and orders and details of information exchange. The essentials. Less banter….
Clancy was less emotional and more detail story driven. The new guys should not lose sight of that, maybe go back and re- read some of the originals.

Andrews and Wilson hit it out of the park.

Wow, for their first Clancy novel and marking the 40th anniversary publication of The Hunt for the Red October. It hit all the high watermarks. Characters from past novels make an appearance. Scott Brick again narrates the Ryanverce with aplomb. The only omission was Jack Jr bringing not his fiance Lizzane to dinner. but a minor detail. I can't wait for Andrews and Wilson's next instalment.

Back to the old school

Although I still have 3 hours to go and I hope it ends well I can already say that I'm very pleased with the approach of the two new authors taking the series back to its early days, bringing elements and characters from the Red October era, the one thing I found unbearable and super FORCED was to add Katie Ryan to the "family business", really didn't like that and legit it made no sense at all tbh
