About this listen
Spring, 1940: with Britons facing what has become known as the Bore War - nothing much seems to have happened yet - Maisie Dobbs is asked to investigate the disappearance of a local lad, a young apprentice craftsman working on a 'hush-hush' government contract.
As Maisie's inquiry reveals a possible link to the London underworld, so the country is bracing for a possible enemy invasion amid news of the British expeditionary force stranded along the French coast. And another mother is worried about a missing son - but this time the boy in question is one beloved by Maisie.

The best so far?
I have either listened to or read all of the Maisie Dobbs series to date and I think this is up there with the best so far. It was a very personal book and I wasn’t at all surprised to discover that Winspear had drawn on many family stories from WWll for the content. I found the book quite moving in places and it was lovely to benefit from the author’s meticulous research into this fascinating year (1940) of the war.
Julie Teale gave her usual excellent reading. I like her pace and the space she gives words and sentences. Highly recommended.

The history lesson in the story makes it all so real. Have to go back and listen to the first & fill in the gaps in Maises story
