About this listen

He was her target. She was his diversion. Falling in love was never something they wanted.

As a con woman who has spent her entire life fending for herself on the streets of London, Rose Wakefield knows how to scam a gentleman out of his money without ever getting caught. That's until she knocks on the wrong earl's door and is faced with Carver Ashburn Earl of Kensworth and not the notorious rake she thinks she is approaching.

Carver is a good man, but even a good man will not pass up an opportunity to escape his grief. What better way to avoid his feelings than to play into a con woman's ruse and offer to marry her?

Things only grow more complicated when Carver sweeps Rose off to his family estate and circumstances force them both into continuing the ruse. Carver needs to protect his family, and Rose needs to protect herself - and her heart.

With so much set against them, will Rose and Carver have a chance at love and freedom? Or is the possibility of more heartache not worth the risk?

Charming and captivating

So nice to hear something a little different, I’ve heard rags to riches before but a con artist was new for me. I really enjoyed the banter, the emotional struggle, and the supporting characters were fleshed out well too. Even got a little bit teary near the end. I will be listening to this one again I’m sure!

Slow to the extreme

If you like a very very slow-burn romance, this book may be for you. While the plot had extreme promise and gripped you from the beginning, so much of this book could have been cut out. It felt like the author was given an essay assignment by a teacher that had a strict word count. She also constantly asked internal monologue questions while doing the different povs, to the point where it became slightly annoying.

I did enjoy both characters, but it is hard to root for a romance when the male lead spends 30 odd chapters mooning over his dead childhood sweetheart.
I have given this book a review of 3, but only because I do think the author has a lot of promise in her writing but she really needs to learn to trim the fat.

The narrator spoke so slowly it was a little jarring so I listened on increased speed so she sounded like a normal person.

Beautiful

What an awesome love story. Took me back in time, away from life as it is and it showed me how things could be done, even in today’s world. Romance needs a big push as our world has become very lustful.
It would be nice to see love and romance Take a step up beautifully written.

Steady and sweet

The book is fun and amusing, but the narration is laboured. Rachael Beresford's style is just a touch slow, and I think it is the main contributing factor to the 10 hours of listening time rather than actual content. Once I pushed myself through the first chapter, I changed the speed to 1.1 and found it a much easier listen.
Overall, the story is sweet and clean.
A common con woman inserts herself in high society to fleece rich gentlemen to give to the poor orphans (give me strength 🙄). She tries to do "a job" on a disreputable Lord but ends up attempting to embezle the wrong man.
He basically abducts her, in the most honourable way of course, they fall in love in the space of about 3 days and you can connect the dots from there.
I enjoyed the banter, and the extended Dalton family was a nice touch.

Very special and romantic.

This sweet story, highly realistic in its descriptions, and is every girl’s dream. Jane would have enjoyed it!

Fabulous!

I adored the leads. Their witty banter was most entertaining. I cannot fault this well-written story and felt Rachel Beresford gave a wonderful performance breathing life and soul into this romance.

Regency Romance

Struggled to finish it. Slow, kept waiting for it to get better. Characters were shallow, messed up, constantly changing their minds. Relationship based on attraction - 'in love' in 3 days and knew nothing about each other. Wouldn't listen to it again.
