Publisher's Summary
Adair Finch is the most powerful warlock in the world, and one of the best private investigators for hire.
He has dealt with corporate vampires, murderous werewolves, and even fae royalty. Everything was perfect until he lost one case—the case where he also lost his brother.
So Finch retired. From magic. From PI work. From everything.
Bree Blackstone, a twelve-year-old witch, doesn’t know or care about any of that except Finch’s reputation. In the middle of the night, she bangs on Finch’s door. Her mother has been murdered, and now the assassin is after Bree as well.
Reluctantly, Finch agrees to help, only to discover something sinister has been brewing in town while he ignored the world… He’ll need to dust off all his old skills and magic before it’s too late.

A solid, entertaining story by an author who knows her stuff!
The Time-marked Warlock is the first in a new series by Shami Stovall. 5 stars from me because I really enjoyed the story and it was immediately obvious the author knew what she was doing. The opening was snappy and all the hints given about magic and the characters were solidly delivered upon. It's a character driven story, built around Adair Finch (the time-marked warlock) and Bree Blackstone (the young victim of crime) but had the perfect balance of action to keep me utterly focussed and enjoying the pace. I haven't found many books where the story happens in such a restricted setting and is carried mainly by two people....and a pigeon/cat/frog, but this was a wonderful example of how a well written story can exist in a narrow frame and still be highly entertaining. The time magic used by the MC really does make it Groundhog Day-esque but the author manages to keep the repetition fresh, and changes her description of it's effect to reflect the mood at the time of each reset, which I thought was clever. The 'detective solving the case and saving the day' trope is a common one but was well done here, with self-deprecation, humour, snark and grief, and some likeable good guys balanced by detestable bad guys. Adair's character growth was a lovely bonus and makes the next in the series even more enticing.
I've preordered book 2.
The performance of the audiobook gets 4 out of 5 because the dramatic sighs and grunts got a bit annoying.
