Publisher's Summary

C. S. Lewis reworks the timeless myth of Cupid and Psyche into an enduring piece of contemporary fiction in this novel about the struggle between sacred and profane love.

Set in the pre-Christian world of Glome on the outskirts of Greek civilization, it is a tale of two princesses: the beautiful Psyche, who is loved by the god of love himself, and Orual, Psyche's unattractive and embittered older sister, who loves Psyche with a destructive possessiveness. Her frustration and jealousy over Psyche's fate sets Orual on the troubled path of self-discovery.

Lewis's last work of fiction, this is often considered his best by critics.

Critic Reviews

"In Mr. Lewis's sensitive hands the ancient myth retains its fascination while being endowed with new meanings, new depths, new terrors." (Saturday Review)

"Whenever Nadia May reads, a sensation of comfort creeps into the atmosphere. Her vocal clarity and understanding of the author's meaning bring pleasure and even security to the listening of each work." (AudioFile)

"The most significant and triumphant work that Lewis has...produced." (New York Herald Tribune)

The Story Stays With You

The reader is very good. Her British accent gives a middle ages feel but the story is clearly in a time B.C.
This book is densely packed with emotional and thought provoking events. I thought I knew which way the story would go but Lewis doesn't allow you to predict his path so easily.
I found myself wanting to find out what happens next. so listened through quite quickly. it was a type of book that you get into the characters and world so much at the end I felt disturbed and wanted the world to be different. Wanted the character to make a different choice because she was wrong.
This represents all the hallmarks that Lewis has written a book that "gets to you", and it stays with you.

Self reflection

An excellent listen, Wanda McCaddon reads a favourite Greek tale as written with care by an equally favourite CS Lewis :-)

Story and Narration both excellent

This is C.S. Lewis' best and most mature work (in his opinion as well as mine). The story is a must-read for fans of Lewis, Greek myth or literature with sensitive and moving explorations of profound spiritual, psychological and philosophical themes. Equally enjoyable by believers and non-believers, and I would imagine more palatable to the non-religious than Lewis' more blatantly didactic/allegorical works. Make no mistake, there is plenty of allegory here too, but it is first and foremost a good story. The narrator is excellent and does perfect justice to Lewis' simple, yet elegant and evocative style.

Interesting story and setting

It explored the emotions of the oldest daughter well, her actions, her thoughts etc. What suffering jealousy can lead to.

Just wow

I've read several CS LEWIS books, and this must be my favourite one. The storyline and the changes to the original Greek mythology was entertaining, enlightening and filled with so much meaning I must now enter the realm of commentary on the subject.

Life Changing

Ever feel like your life is going around and around in circles and that you have been dealt an unfair set of circumstances? This exceptional piece of work will help you realise that there is far more to life than our current reality and all that we think that is good may not be and the same can be said of the things we deem bad. The narrator in this version brought the various characters to life perfectly and I thoroughly recommend it.
