Publisher's Summary
Naomi Novik’s stunning series of novels follow the adventures of Captain William Laurence and his fighting dragon Temeraire as they are thrown together to fight for Britain during the turbulent time of the Napoleonic Wars.
History takes flight in this deliciously addictive novel, which captures the Napoleonic period perfectly and skilfully layers history with imagination by adding a Dragon Air Force to the battle for England.
Temeraire is a Celestial dragon, the most highly-prized of all draconic breeds; famed for their intelligence, agility and most of all for the Divine Wind – their terrible roar capable of shattering the heavy timbers of war ships and devastating woodland. Captured by the British, Temeraire was meant to be the companion of the Emperor Napoleon and not captained by a mere officer in the British Air Corps. The Chinese have demanded his return and the British government cannot afford to provoke the Asian super-power into allying with the French – even if it costs them the most powerful weapon in their arsenal, and forces Laurence and Temeraire apart.
Critic Reviews
"I took a jaundiced view of dragon books until Novik won me over with her first novel. the combination of military history, sympathetic characters, and engaging style makes this series great, intelligent fun." (The Times)
"Plenty of intrigue, swordplay, exotic locations, plausible invention. In short a treat." (The Telegraph)
"In the best tradition of fantasy, historical fiction and nautical novels." (Guardian)

a bit drawn out
as much as i am loving this series i felt this second book was a bit drawn out and the ending rushed. at least 3/4 of the book tajen up with the voyage and a few things left un finished. but still thoroughly enjoyable and well narrated.

Had to restart
Book 2 of the Temeraire series -Captain William Laurence of the British Air Corps and his dragon, Temeraire, begin their slow voyage to China, fearful that upon landing they will be forced to part by Imperial decree. Compared to the first book this was a little slower in places. I actually started and stopped and then started again. How dragons are treated in Europe versus China is an interesting aspect to the story and paves the way for Temeraire to consider the treatment of dragons in England - I really liked that. So often we consider we treat another species really well and how they want to be treated until we have a comparison!

enthralling story and lovable characters
I feel so attached to these characters, novik created and vance brought to life. I particularly love the voice he created for temeraire and the fierce equality novik imbued him with. I'm up to the last book now and i think I'll have to start the whole series again, its awesome.
