About this listen

William Wells Brown (1814-1884) was a prominent abolitionist lecturer, novelist, playwright, and historian. Born into slavery in the Southern United States, Brown escaped to the North, where he worked for abolitionist causes and was a prolific writer and lecturer. In 1847, he published the Narrative of William W. Brown, a Fugitive Slave, written by himselfClotel; or, The President's Daughter (1853). However, because the novel was published in England, the book is not the first African-American novel published in the United States. Most scholars agree that Brown is the first published African-American playwright.

Editorial reviews

William Wells Brown was a prominent abolitionist, writer, historian and lecturer who was born into slavery in the South. After escaping to the North, he began publishing his works, including this account of his travels in Europe. Narrator Varick Boyd picks up the oratorical quality of Brown's writing and delivers his words with ringing vitality. Brown visited a huge number of attractions, and Boyd narrates his sharp observations of the people and cultures he encountered with enthusiasm and passion. Listeners will enjoy these reflections on Europe from a unique perspective.
