About this listen
Failed academic Frank Nichols and his wife, Eudora, have arrived in the sleepy Georgia town of Whitbrow, where Frank hopes to write a history of his family's old estate - the Savoyard Plantation - and the horrors that occurred there. At first, the quaint, rural ways of their new neighbors seem to be everything they wanted. But there is an unspoken dread that the townsfolk have lived with for generations. A presence that demands sacrifice. It comes from the shadowy woods across the river, where the ruins of Savoyard still stand. Where a longstanding debt of blood has never been forgotten. A debt that has been waiting patiently for Frank Nichols' homecoming...

“One of the best first novels I’ve ever read.” (Charlaine Harris, number one New York Times best-selling author)
“An unsettling brew of growing menace spiked with flashes of genuine terror - do not miss this chilling debut. Christopher Buehlman is a writer to watch. I look forward to hearing from him again. And soon.” (F. Paul Wilson, New York Times best-selling author of Sibs)
“Lures you into a different era, seduces you with eloquent prose and sensual period details, then clamps down on your jugular.... An outstanding debut.” (Hank Schwaeble, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Diabolical)

Not for me.
This book would suit someone who enjoys southern folk horror with a dash of psychological tensions and mystery. The characters are well developed and the plot is enjoyable and builds to a satisfying climactic finish. The narrator is also good. Objectively a good book. Subjectively, not my kind of book.

Expected a little more
I wouldn't dissuade anyone from reading this, and I'll almost certainly give the author another chance (this is his first book), but I was expecting more given the reviews I'd read.
Overall it was OK. The story itself is fine. The first half of the book could have been trimmed down. Aside from the salient plot points, I have no memory of what else happened in the first half of the book. Once the action picked up in the last third, it was pretty enjoyable. My very minor gripes about the book are the dumb and unnecessary sex scenes and the pretty ham-fisted attempts at engaging with racial issues of the time (or at least that's how it appeared to me).
Narration was easy to listen to and follow with the use of multiple voices.

chilling and alive
loved this book. he paints us a grim but robust picture of depression era Georgia, and weaves us a tale of slave era mistakes and revenge.
