Han landsforvises og mister alt: sit sprog, publikum, teater. Og til sidst også kone og barn, for Thomasine gifter sig med den mand, hun har forelsket sig i, den svenske adelsmand Carl Gyllembourg. I samme åndedrag mister hun sin søn, et krav fra Heiberg for at acceptere skilsmissen. Men kan selv det mest elskede menneske fylde hele ens liv? Erstatte ens barn?
