About this listen
Contains two stand-alone books from Benedict Patrick’s Yarnsworld series.
Series can be listened to in any order.
They Mostly Come out at Night, book one
The villagers of the forest seal themselves in their cellars at night, whispering folktales to each other about the monsters that prey on them in the dark. Only the Magpie King, their shadowy, unseen protector, can keep them safe.
However, when an outcast called Lonan begins to dream of the Magpie King’s defeat at the hands of inhuman invaders, this young man must do what he can to protect his village. He is the only person who can keep his loved ones from being stolen away after dark, and to do so he will have to convince them to trust him again.
From the Shadows of the Owl Queen's Court, book four
If you value your life, stay out of the forest. As a captive of the Owl Queen’s Court, Nascha’s life has always been one knife’s edge away from disaster. But when she is threatened for nothing more than the color of her hair, Nascha attempts the unthinkable: an escape through the dreaded Magpie King’s forest.
Hunted by sharp-toothed and sharper-witted foxfolk and hated by all for being a witch, Nascha fears herself doomed until she joins forces with a mysterious young man. With him she finds a glimmer of hope, even as her own unpredictable powers flicker into existence.
But hope is fleeting. The forces arrayed against her are insurmountable, and Nascha soon comes to realize that pursuit of her own freedom will come at a greater cost to the forest. As the darkness closes in around them, Nascha is forced to ask: At what price is she willing to purchase her life? How dearly is she willing to sell it?
Includes a special note from the author.

Wasn’t predictable as I expected
I enjoyed the story as it wasn’t as predictable as a lot of fantasy books I listen to. The narrator is a wonderful job with the characters. I recommend a listen.

More Fairy Tale than Fantasy
This book is probably saved by the amazing work of narrator, Derek Perkins. Having enjoyed his work in the Brian D Anderson books, it's a pleasure to hear his ability to act out a variety of characters and give them real personalities and differences in tone, inflection and manner.
As for this first installment there's a few things to say, and really none of them are negative, just... different!
The format of this first installment is a story intertwined with some short fairy tale-style side adventures, then a second story intertwined with yet more short fairy tale-style side adventures that encompass characters from both stories. The thing to take into this book is that it's not a traditional Fantasy story - it's much more a behind the scenes of what happened to make a fairy tale. Certainly that's the case for the first story, and the short stories that read very much like a Grimm or other old European tale. The second story however is much more evolved in terms of the telling and very much more like a Fantasy story - also being a far superior story to its predecessor.
The universe is interesting, the characters very much in the hands of Derek Perkins as he builds on the fairly plain dialogue to bring us in. The characters in the first story are somewhat flat in comparison to the second story, but the author does well changing the style between the short stories and the longer narratives.
Overall it's a good listen, and you can see the author maturing as his style evolves, but really the star is Perkins. Will I delve back into this universe for more? Probably not, but it's well worth a listen and then you can decide.
