Publisher's Summary

Caitlyn Aguirre should have been a magician. Her family certainly expected her to be a magician. But by the time she reached her 12th birthday, Caitlyn hadn't even managed to cast a single spell! In desperation, her parents send her - and her magical sisters - to Jude's Sorcerous Academy, her last best chance to discover her powers.

But as she struggles to survive her classes without a single spell to her name, Caitlyn starts to uncover an ancient mystery that may prove the key to her true powers.... If she lives long enough to find it.

kid safe HP

Great story for primary school children. I really liked the story line and the setting. It lacked descriptions in some areas. I felt that Christopher could have allowed me touch the ancient walls and feel the dust or smell a rancid potion. Instead I was always faraway from my characters. Still I will continue to read the series, which may end up being a part our reading list in the classroom.

An original view of magic and it's machinations

An absorbing, enjoyable read. It would especially appeal to young adults. I found it fascinating as an adult.

Great magic theory and plot, but lacking in style.

Starting with what I liked, the narrator was please t to listen to and did a great job distinguishing voices between characters.

The magic system Nuttal used was very well thought out and I really enjoyed a lot of the in depth explanations for the way magic worked in different circumstances. I found the core idea of why objects of power didn't work (I won't spoil it here) a very clever and unique way of thinking about artificing.

The main characters were well defined and distinguishable from each other, and their goals were clearly set out enough that I could follow their evolution towards those goals throughout the story.

However, the prose needed some work and there was a lot of very repetitive terminology, with key descriptive words often being repeated several times over the span of a couple of sentences.

There was a painful abundance of the main character "groaning inwardly" and a lot of other people "glaring angrily," "running hastily" and many other instances of "verbing verbily" to the point where one might fatally wound oneself to make a drinking game of taking a shot at every instance.

Not a terrible read, but not one I'll recommend to anyone any time soon.
