About this listen

In this new novella from the number one internationally best-selling author of The Sisters and The Murder Rule, Dervla McTiernan, a mother and son fighting to prove her innocence are reunited with an estranged friend—a detective who may hold the key to her freedom—as they’re forced to put their differences aside to uncover the shocking truth behind the crime.

When Clara Coleman is taken into custody, her teenage son, Sebastien, wastes no time before calling Simon Miller: an estranged family friend and detective in their old hometown of Hartford, Connecticut. Clara’s been arrested for the murder of Rachel Stapleton, a wealthy housewife and prominent figure in Lavender Valley, their well-to-do New Jersey suburb. But she swears she did not commit the crime.

Simon knows that Clara is not capable of murder and will do anything he can to prove her innocence—he’s felt indebted to the Coleman family since her husband, Will, Simon’s best friend, passed away years before. He arrives in Lavender Valley and hits the ground running on the case. With time, details surrounding the crime as well as the Colemans’ family history are revealed, unravelling the complex web of cause and effect that will finally bring the truth to light.

Dervla is marvellous …..a super writer

I’ve been waiting for a new Dervla McTiernan book for a year to me she is my favourite author. As you listen your feelings constantly change. Most books are obvious but not with Dervla McTiernan.

Not bad for a short piece of fiction

The trouble with this book is the narration, particularly Neil Hellegers. Seb's narration by Michael Crouch was a welcome relief, but there was less of him. Hellegers had some of the oddest cadence I've heard, and I've listened to a lot of audio books. The way he portrayed Clara was just weird.. stilted and bizarre. Simon was all over the place as well.
I didn't mind the story, but it definitely isn't her finest work. I had definitely not guessed the perp, and that's always a good thing. But this is far from her best writing.

Ok for a short story

Airport fiction. Not as strong as the author’s other works but brainless fodder for daily commute. Narration ok at best.

Didn’t make sense

Up until the last chapter the story was ok, but it made absolutely no sense at the end! It’s as if the author accidentally put the last chapter of a different book into this one. Weird.

another great story

I enjoyed the story ... though Simon's narrator was a bit hard to listen to ... not enough expression quite monotone. I'm glad it wasn't too long.

definitely the wrong one

certainly a good book to read., certainly did not like the style of the narrator. he had the wrong voice the wrong emphasis and just didn't portray the right feelings for the character he was portraying 🙂

Sorry Dervla

This is my first negative review for this author. Narration felt monotone and boring. It was an effort to finish.
