About this listen
It has been generations since the Northlands have seen a hero worthy of the title. Many have made the claim, but few have lived to defend it. Timid, weak, and bullied, Wulfric is as unlikely a candidate as there could be.
A chance encounter with an ancient and mysterious object awakens a latent gift, and Wulfric's life changes course. Against a backdrop of war, tragedy, and an enemy whose hatred for him knows no bounds, Wulfric will be forged from a young boy into the Wolf of the North. This is his tale.

Decent low magic fantasy
Good book, a bit predictable. Lays the foundation for a solid world. Hero feels real not an instantly op God of death.

A pleasing newcomer
I really enjoyed the feeling of historical epochs evolving here. Although the story of the hero is a little cliched I did like the way he had dark sides to his personality.

A fine start. Looking forward to book two and three
I’ve been listening to a lot of classic 80s epic fantasy lately, and struggled for a time to find something to tide me over while waiting for the Unabridged version of “The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara” to be released.
“The Wolf of the North” was a stab in the dark for me, having heard neither of it or it’s author.
It’s set on a much smaller scale than the epic fantasy I’ve become accustomed to. No great evil from the north threatening all the land (it’s always the north, isn’t it?).
Instead we are treated to a warrior’s journey from preteen to adulthood during a time where his class is fading from village leader to obscurity and fading memory.
Against this backdrop is set some political treachery and an enduring love story that will eventually see our hero begin Jorunder’s Journey in book two.
The writing was excellent and, as always Simon Vance gave an enthralling voice to the tale and it’s characters.
Planing on hitting the play button on book two right after submitting this review.
