About this listen
Wayne Bennett is the greatest rugby league coach Australia has ever had. He has won seven premierships and is the greatest man manager the game has known.
He is a living contradiction: a self-professed introvert who can hold an audience in the palm of his hand; an autocrat on a humanitarian mission to make good men of his young charges; a devoted husband (and father of the year) who left his wife after 42 years of marriage. Other coaches decry his tactics then attempt to imitate them. Players are desperate to work with him but are left feeling deceived when he cuts them loose. The media disparages him then lavishes him with praise.
So who is the real Wayne Bennett?
Celebrated sports journalist Andrew Webster has been on a mission to find out. For two years, he has interviewed family, close friends, sworn enemies, colleagues, coaches and players, as well as Bennett himself, and trawled through acres of print and recordings.
Webster shows us a complex, brilliant and difficult man. We come to admire the good wolf of Bennett's nature - the genius who transforms young unformed players into titans of the game. And the bad wolf - the wrangler who plays the dark arts of football politics with obsessive determination.
Expertly written, Webster's account of Bennett is not unlike the man himself: controversial, combative, and impossible to ignore.

Nothing much new here
An easy to listen to book with a very good narrator but there was nothing much new in here about Wayne Bennett and the affair he had with Dale Cage was only briefly touched on which to me was a topic that was important in Bennetts story after being married for 42 years.

Seemingly balance and without agenda
Usually with Rugby League writings you can't help but be put off by the hidden agendas. This felt like an honest account.
Webster's done really well here. He should stay off the TV and invest more of his energies into books like this.
As for the reader, he just missed way too many name pronunciations.

Lazy performance..
Why wouldn't you research the players names if you've never heard of them? Good listen otherwise.

The life of the master coach
The reader of this book really needs to have a basic understanding of the words he's reading. "Tallies" when referring to beer are the plural of tall, not related to "tally". Wayne went to Petrie (pea-tree) Terrace, not "petry". They're minor points that detract from the delivery of the story. The story itself is interesting seeing Wayne's difficult start in life and many challenges he faced. His legacy is how he dealt with his challenges rather than had a lucky run of not having any. He had more than his fair share
