About this listen

The complete set of five novellas from Nick Earls. All individual, all linked in subtle and intriguing ways....

Gotham tells of the encounter between music journalist Jeff Foster and 'boy pharaoh' Na$ti Boi. Venice is about love and the tensions that pull us apart. Vancouver is the story Paul would tell if he were living in plague times - a story that comforts, a story that wards off evil. Juneau captures an acutely observed moment in which we see the universe. NoHo is about living in the shadows of the famous. The introduction to the complete set is written and narrated by Chris Flynn and the afterword written and narrated by Nick Earls.

Thought provoking work

It wasn’t until I’d finished the fifth work that I really appreciated what Nick had done In weaving these stories together. The story of Nud in Vancouver is a candid look at the life of a published author. It moved me the most. Noho stayed with me the most. It creates an internal shudder that’s still reverberating. The work is capped off my Nick’s personal critique of his own work and an expose of novellas and short stories. Well worth contemplating. I will listen to that again. Highly recommend it.

The novella makes a strong return

This is a wonderful linked series of novellas. I liked some of the stories more than the others, but they were all interesting, difference and yet made a cohesive whole.

The different narrators for each story were a really nice addition.

Captivating

Overall a beautiful set of novellas. I wanted to know more!
Four out of five for performance because I did not enjoy Michael Dorman’s narration of Vancouver. But the other four narrators were wonderful.

Nick Earls at his best

Every story is engaging and fascinating, every performance absolutely perfect. Don't sleep on this one, especially if you're a fan of Earls, or writers like him e.g. Tim Winton.
