About this listen

Who was Friedrich Nietzsche? This lonely and chronically ill, yet passionate, daring, and complex man is perhaps the most mysterious and least understood of all contemporary philosophers. Why are his brilliant insights so relevant for today? How did he become the most misinterpreted and unfairly maligned intellectual figure of the last two centuries?

To provide shape to Nietzsche's thought, each of these 24 lectures focuses on specific ideas that preoccupied Nietzsche while tracing the profound themes that give meaning to his work. You'll get a chance to put Nietzsche's life and work in a larger historical and philosophical context. You'll explore the controversial philosopher's subtle, complex critique of both religious belief and Greek rationalism.

You'll also spend a wealth of time focusing on Nietzsche's famous writing style, which deftly combines the majesty of the prophet, the force of the Homeric warrior, and the lyricism of the poet - but which nonetheless is rife with inconsistencies, exaggerations, and personal attacks. And you'll get a better understanding of Nietzsche's complaints and criticisms of the intellectual currents of his time: Christian moralism, evolution, socialism, democracy, and nationalism.

As you make your way through these lectures, you'll discover that Nietzsche, even at his most polemical and offensive, exudes an unmistakable enthusiasm and love of life. In fact, you'll see that his exhortation to learn to love and accept one's own life, to make it better by becoming who one really is, forms the project that is the true core of his work.

Highly recommended

Professor Robert C. Solomon and Kathleen Higgins did a superb job here to dissect his complex ideas and present them in plain English.

I can’t say I understood everything in there. There are some lectures I needed to listen to again and again.

However, at the end of lecture 24, I think I got at least some rudimentary concepts on his life, ideas and their impact on our own life.

Great lectures

Very clear and thought provoking even after I’ve read Nietzsche myself and has given me more motivation to keep reading him

very informative and great delivery

Very enjoyable. Have listened to the book twice so far and had to replay certain parts numerous times to better understand some of the ideas presented, not because of any fault with the lecturers but because i wanted to understand the material better.
Delivery by the lecturers was excellent. They were clearly lovers of Nietzsche and had depth of knowledge about him.
Some of the philosopher's key ideas were well presented and discussed.
The presenters did such a good job that I am inspired to read Nietzsche myself and have bought a book. This lecture series will undoubtedly have given my enough background to make any reading more productive.

Great Delivery

I really enjoyed the dual lecturers format
And gee they know their stuff. I find Nietzsche confusing and this helps clear a few things up . “Nietzsche “ is a way of thinking that needs a lot of time and study so best to start here rather than go straight to the texts

Fred was on about more than nothing

Higgins and Solomon are both insightful in their presentation of Nietzsche's ideas and works. Together they bring together several decades of academic devotion to the topic and this shows. Many thanks.

I've read many of Nietzsche's books and loved them all so listening to these well presented lectures reinforced and clarified the ideas and concepts I read about.

How to bring Nietzsche a little closer to your lif

This is a comprehensive, accessible survey and treatment of Nietzsche's thought. It also places Nietzsche in his contemporary context and in a wider social and philosophical context. The professors added personal touches that were refreshing.
