About this listen
For fans of Louise Penny, C. J. Box, and Nevada Barr comes a haunting crime novel set in Glacier National Park, where one man finds himself on a collision course with the dark heart of the wild and the even darker heart of human nature.
It was a clear, starry night in Glacier National Park. Fourteen-year-old Ted Systead and his father were camping peacefully beneath the rugged peaks and sweeping sky when the unimaginable happened: Ted's father was mauled by a grizzly bear and dragged to his death.
Now, 20 years later, as a special agent for the Department of the Interior, Ted is called back to investigate a crime that echoes the horror of that night. Only this time the victim was tied to a tree before the animal's attack. Ted teams up with one of the park officers - a man named Monty, whose pleasant exterior masks an all-too-vivid knowledge of the area. Residents of the nearby community are less than forthcoming. Suspicious of outsiders and intimately connected to the wilderness that surrounds them, they confront their fellow man and nature with equal measures of reverence and brutality. As the days pass with no clear answers, not only is human life at stake but so too is that of a majestic creature who carries with it valuable evidence. Ted's search for truth takes him far into the wilderness, on the trail of a killer, and eventually to a shocking and unexpectedly personal conclusion.
Rich in atmosphere and evocative, lush descriptions, The Wild Inside is a gripping debut novel about the wondrously perilous intersection between man and nature.

Slow
I found the story to be very slow - not altogether bad but it didn't hold my attention. I did stick with it but even a couple of chapters from the end, I was thinking to myself that if I never found out who did it, I don't think that would bother me at all. I liked the setting and characters but would have liked a faster pace to the overall storyline.

Good Read
I almost didn’t get this book due to some of the previous reviews however R C Bray I’d one of my favourite narrators so I took a leap of faith.
So glad I did, this is a frat book with lots of layers and will keep you guessing. The references to animal cruelty in previous reviews, in my opinion, were exaggerated and I wouldn’t let that deter you.

Not bad, but I'm iffy
It was a good story, but once it ends you realise that two thirds of the story ends up being irrelevant to solving the case.

The crime part was alright
The crime part was alright if a bit grizzly (sorry) but the detective going over and over his problems became too much. I listened to the end just to see who did it.

I read a later novel by this author and enjoyed it so much I have gone back to the beginning to read the rest. Really enjoying this new found author. Great stories, unique and very interesting cast of characters.

Boring
The book was well written with minute attention to the development and presentation of each character and to the setting. I wish the plot was given such attention - it would have been an excellent read.
The story was boring and went on and on only to arrive back at the same point or an inch ahead of where it started. My first book by this author. I’ll avoid in future.

TRIGGER WARNING: Animal cruelty
The story was interesting. But there's descriptions of a dog being beaten to death, and it's mentioned multiple times. Then a flashback story to a main character's childhood dog going missing, likely killed... I stopped listening.
R. C. Bray was terrific, as always.
