About this listen

Up on the chalk downs they call The Wold, witches are banned: ever since the Baron's son vanished in the woods. Anyway, as all witches know, chalk's no good for magic.

Nine-year-old Tiffany Aching thinks her Granny Aching, a wise shepherd, might have been a witch, but now Granny Aching is dead, and it's up to Tiffany to work it all out when strange things begin happening: a fairy-tale monster in the stream, a headless horseman, and, strangest of all, the tiny blue men in kilts, the Wee Free Men, who have come looking for the new "hag". These are the Nac Mac Feegles, the pictsies, who like nothing better than thievin', fightin', and drinkin'.

Then Tiffany's young brother goes missing and Tiffany and the Wee Free Men must join forces to save him from the Queen of the Fairies.

Critic Reviews

"There is plenty to laugh at here...not least Pratchett's ability to put a 90 degree spin on the familiar." ( The Times)
"Written with children in mind, these are tales that any adult lover of finely paced, funny and satisfying moral story-telling will appreciate... The combination of Pratchett's genius for writing deadpan humour and Robinson's genius for reading is a match made in comedy heaven." ( The Times Audiobook Review)

Narrator isn't ideal

Tony Robinson's chosen voice for the feegles is very hard on the ears. He is an excellent reader but in this case its just impossible to stick with the story. It's breathy falsetto and just irritating after a while. I returned this one in favor of Stephen Briggs version.

Poor recording quality

We absolutely love this story and Tony is a great actor, but the recording quality was so poor that it was very frustrating to listen to. It would get ear-piercingly loud or so soft that we missed what was said. I don’t recommend this version.

Doesn’t do it justice

I love the story. I just can’t stand the narration.
The feegles may be tiny but never did I imagine them as high pitched and screechy. Hard to listen to.
