About this listen
An action-packed flintlock fantasy audiobook about guns, mages, bards, and dragons!
Ulric, former war hero, has been living a quiet life of exile in the frontier city of Quinport and wants only to continue hiding from the mistakes of his past. But then he discovers the invention of a revolutionary new kind of rifle, and worse, the ruling Coalition discovers his identity.
Enter Dellioph, no mere bard, who just arrived to Quinport and wants only to play his music and to keep his secrets. But trying to do both lands him directly in the path of one of the Coalition chancellors, who wants to use Dellioph and his secrets. Dellioph must choose to keep his secrets, his freedom, or his music. But when the choice is between anything and his music, it’s no choice at all.
And Gali, future chief of the one of the Teo tribes, who wants nothing more than to save her people, even if that means forcing them to change. She disobeys her father, lies to her people, and travels to the Coalition city to learn how to do some of the things they do—making and using muskets foremost among them. But the people of the Coalition are not ready to accept the Teo, and Gali will be forced to learn the hard way that a renegade’s only friend is another renegade.
Meanwhile, two mysterious strangers from opposite sides of the world come hunting a sorcerer who has unbelievable power, a hunger for more, and dragons, but they are nothing like the stories.

excellent
I have been looking for a series like "the blade itself" trilogy and I think I have found it. It's more magic based but still very good. looking forward to book 2

Steven Pacey is great as usual
I got this title because I'm a fan of Steven Pacey. It was a bit odd with him doing American voices as I'm not used to it but he does really good job as usual. The story was great and the characters were relatable. There's a more than passing resemblance to Joe Abercrombie although it could just be that I'm used to the narration of the books. I enjoyed this title and look forward to more from Steve Wall.

Interested to see what comes next
I chose this book because of the interesting world it promised with sorcery and gunpowder colliding, and also for the narration by Steven Pacey - my favourite narrator since the Joe Abercrombie books.
The story and style actually reminds me of Joe Abercrombie, but not quite as exceptional (yet?) I felt like the pacing wasn't quite as strong as the very best books I've read, but the characters are interesting and the world building is great too. I'm very hopeful that the next book in the series picks up the pace and intrigue a little more to really make this the exceptional series that it seems to have the foundations to be.

Really enjoyable book, finished it in a day. the world felt rich and deep, and the characters are all interesting. I also love the integration of muskets and magic.

Enthralling
The only negative is how long it goes on about the enchantment magic and the crowd. Other than that, I wish there was more about Dio.. great listen. Couldn’t get enough. Can’t wait for the next

Good fast paced story, cool characters with interesting back stories
I really enjoyed this book, it reminded me of Joe Abercrombie and other less traditional elves & goblins fantasy. Can't wait for the next book

Even Pacey couldn’t save it!
Terrible, tired story. Too many superfluous adjectives and worst of all no humour! The legendary Narrator Pacey couldn’t redeem it. Was like a blend of the name of the wind and red country. But had none of the character development, colloquialisms or humour synonymous with Abercrombie. The two stars I have were for Pacey.
