About this listen

Looking back, they called those turbulent times simply The Troubles.

A period of chaotic upheaval and destruction that sent the Republic reeling through successive crises, each growing more desperate as the galaxy spun out of control.

Exactly when The Troubles started…that was open to interpretation. After the Savage Wars were thought to have ended, said some. Others claimed the period of death and war began with the Republic's action on Psydon. Still, others pointed to the Republic's forced migration of the zhee or even the arrival of the Mid-Core Rebellion, culminating in victories against the Legion at Kublar and the genocidal atrocities extending as far as Rhysis Whan.

But no matter when they began, the galaxy-shaking events of The Troubles were well remembered by those who suffered through them, and the scars of those upheavals would leave their indelible mark for years, and perhaps lifetimes, to come.

The brazen and open government corruption infesting the former capital planet of Utopion.

The arrival of the tyrant Goth Sullus, who briefly united opposition to the Republic before falling prey to the vanity of the title…The Emperor.

The Legion's invocation of Article Nineteen of the Republic Constitution, which brought an all-consuming flame to a simmering cold war that had long been stewing between the rulers and those forced to fight their needless wars.

The sudden unexpected attack by an alien race known as the Cybar. Relentless. Cruel. Inhuman in the extreme.

And finally, the long-planned return of a tribe of lost Savages, led by their messiah…the Golden King.

The Troubles. A quaint name for a horrific period in the galaxy's history. A period whose atrocities were superseded only by the terror of the Savage Wars that had come before. Almost no corner of the galaxy was spared a taste of terrible war, cutthroat intrigue…and remorseless death.

In the aftermath, this battered galaxy now longs for peace and stability. The Republic, now reformed, seeks to govern by the rule of law. But no matter how sincere the reform, how earnest and well-meaning the ruler, some worlds refuse to place their destiny in the hands of others. Ever again.

Been there. Done that. Got burned along the way.

Because some things never change. Power summons would-be tyrants eager to seize it. Ancient vendettas cry out to be settled. Corruption worms its way through the souls of men too weak to resist it or too wicked to try. And dead-eyed killers gather in all the usual starports, awaiting the opportunity to do what they do best for the promise of a quick credit.

Through it all, the silent Legion waits for its cue to once more tread upon the stage and break its enemies through nothing more and nothing less than total violence of action capably applied. As though this time… things will be different.

Out on the edge, they say…

Everyone's got a plan until the Legion shows up.

Bob gone...

I like the story line and interested to see where they go with it. how ever that's where the good stuff ends! I'm sorry Mark Boyett but R.C. Bray is the Wraith of the voice actor world and without him the series should have stayed complete at the end of season 2

good story but spolled by disappointing performance

I loved seasons 1 and 2 of this series and was so excited to see another installment. I was sadly disappointed that, while the story is good, the performance is really lacking. I often found myself zoning out and missing sections, or becoming frustrated because it wasn't enjoyable to listen to. Some parts felt very monotonous and like the action/descriptio was being read like items on a list that the reader was trying to quickly get through :( Unless their had been a dramatic change in the writing style I think this must be a performance issue.
Please do another book and bring back RC Bray!

Worst of all series both story and performance

The story is weak and just meanders … and the new characters voices are terrible… keel voice is almost juvenile and mellow no strength or power…

I truly hope there is a major step up for the next episode or I’ll have to abandon this what was a great series.

A filler episode of a book

Overall:
Save your credit, or wait for a special to get this book. It’s a filler episode. I’ve tried to not spoil anything below.

The Good :

Some cool back stories of a main characters from previous books. Great narration and a fair effort to take the mantle from RC.

The Bad:

I don’t understand why the authors would release this as book 1 of a new season. Thinking back to series 1 & 2 the initial books set a scene and started or continued a story line that got better and better.

This is like a filler episode that has 10% new material which is not really important to the main arc and 90% flashbacks that have very little to do with moving the plot forward as all the flash backs were for events that have happened in the previous books.

It’s almost like the T-Rex back story books but shoved into the main plot.

The Ugly:

Some of the accents are cringe. Scottish and British accents are … interesting.

Events that happen in the present timeline in early chapters that are pretty cool.

There is a mission that a team is sent on that is “vital” and needs to be done to get “important information”. But then this isn’t addressed again, like not even mentioned.

It’s almost like they shoved in an huge action scene that has no real impact on the story, maybe they had Steven Segal write the story.
