About this listen

Here are the very personal diaries of Richard E. Grant's debut behind the camera, as writer and director of his autobiographical movie of the same name.

It is both a fascinating insight into the intrigues and agonies he encounters along the way, and also a deeply moving portrait of his childhood and his love affair with Swaziland, where he was born and brought up during the last throes of the British Empire.

Through the mayhem - never-ending financial pressures; hostilities, and finally breakdown of communication with his producer; the nerve-racking quest to persuade the King of Swaziland to grant permission to film in his country; the assembly of a stellar cast including Gabriel Byrne, Miranda Richardson, Emily Watson, and Julie Walters - Richard E. Grant has written and reads, with characteristic humour and charm, an extraordinarily honest and revealing account of a labour of love and the realisation of a dream.

I only hope Richard E Grant continues to write

We’ll written; evocative of place and emotions. I hope he continues to write - maybe fiction too?

Fascinating

I enjoyed Richard E Grant's 'with nails' audiobook. His erudite writing and performance contrasts with the vulnerability of the story and exposition make for riveting listening.

lovely honest moving

Warm, witty and charming as I imagine the man to be. Delightfully scathing but only of the French producers

Never Wanted This To End

If you have ever wondered about how hard it is to make a film, this is for you. Narrated with joy and wit by one of the world's most enchanting and loveable actor/directors, this is a simply addictive story about the making of Richard E Grant's autobiographical film with blistering honesty and hilarious anecdotes. I was frequently laughing out loud. Pity the lazy and clearly incompetent French producer who obviously was not up to the job. The worse she is, the thicker his French accent becomes during his captivating impersonations. This should be a must-read book for everyone who attends Film School. Tenacity and passion is in his blood. I absolutely adore this memoir, thick with delicious titbits and gossip for anyone who loves a Hollywood tale.
