About this listen
Concealed by a shroud of dirty brown velvet was what looked like a heap of rags. In a desolate subterranean car park of a Shopping Centre, Dorothy Sanders pulled back the velvet curtain revealing the grim discovery of a woman’s body. Inspector Michael Burden, for a while conducting the investigation without the help of Wexford’s intuitive genius, blunders down a number of blind alleys before uncovering the truth. Who would garrote a middle-aged housewife and leave her body in the parking garage of a suburban shopping mall? Chief Inspector Wexford is no sooner on the case than a car bomb's explosion lands him in the hospital. It's now up to Mike Burden to step in and solve the case. He's got a suspect . . . but will he be able to make him talk?

Better written than much contemporary crime
You have to approach Wexford/Rendell books like historical novels set in the 80s as some elements (social conventions, forensics) are now a bit dated -- but these mysteries are so much better written than many contemporary police procedurals in terms of the observational detail, characterisation and psychology. Rendell is a brilliant story teller who knows how to construct a mystery. This one is hard to guess with a few twists and turns at the end.

Wexford at his best.
The characters seem to come to life in a good story of country living in England.

The Veiled One
Rendell’s psychotic killers never fail to stretch the imagination! The storyline isn’t as gripping as others by the same author but non the less a good performance to
Listen to.

Cracker of a story.
Exciting and a bit complex but not taxing. A bit spooky but not too horrifying.

Another Wexford Intrigue
An easy read with a surprising suspect and psychological twist. The reader is so in tune with the characters that the are distinct and come to life with conviction.
