About this listen

For eight strangers in a Los Angeles hostel, even the other side of the world isn’t far enough. The craving for a new identity and the desire to start again is something they have in common. But they discover that it doesn't matter where you are or who you are - if you can't lay the past to rest, fate and coincidence have a way of catching up with you.

Side characters were interesting

Book was OK. It took far too long in my opinion to get to the core of the book and have things start to get interesting. I’d say you have to be very patient for at LEAST the first 5 hours to fully get into the book. Not one of his greatest compared to the rest.

fantastic characters

this story was such a fantastic ride, you get to know each character so well, all with a problematic past and uncertain future and yet all blend together perfectly. narration was also great considering all the different accents. highly recommend.

Too many moves back and forth in time

it was very hard to follow in the beginning as there were too many characters and too much going back and forth. Chapters were too short, and there were so many of them. The
ending was OK, but not sure if I would recommend this book to others.

So much happening - highly recommend!

When I first started listening to this book, there were so many characters and I was really unclear of who fit in where and what their backstory was. as the story progressed the depth of the characters, and the understanding of their situations was made clear, and the storyline was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes twists, a really solid story and a lot of different story lines linked in throughout - another great book by John Marrs.

Good read

There were so many characters and stories in the beginning, it was hard to keep track.

I persisted and as more information was received each individual and story came to life.

Some great twists and " I didn't see that coming moments".

A good read and glad at the end, the loose ends all got sorted and revealed...no wondering.

Expect the unexpected...

After a bit of a slow start, the story developed very quickly and continually kept surprising me. The narrator was outstanding!

Powered on through a hard listen…

I really love John Marrs, but this novel has been a DNF for me for a long time, and after multiple retries, I decided to power through and figure out whether it or not it was worth the effort.

The conclusion? Yes and No.

The story itself has a lot of different characters and time lines, and at times, especially in the first half of the book - hard to follow. Although, like all John Marrs’ novels, comes together eventually, and pretty satisfyingly on brand for his narratives.

However, I think the narrator lets this one down. I truly appreciate how much effort he gave the characters, and could look past the terrible accents - however, I think the delivery of them (especially Savannah ugh) made the writing feel far more caricature, one-dimensional and often cringe-worthy, than it was intended.

A+ for effort, F for effect.

My advice? If you’re struggling with this one too, it’s worth going to a paper copy.
