About this listen

After a one-night stand with an attractive stranger, pole-dancer Gina Davies finds herself prime suspect in an attempted terrorist attack on Sydney. Hunted by the police, her face stares back at her on the unremitting 24/7 news cycle. She is soon running away from her dreams for a better life and witnessing every truth turn into a betrayal.

The Unknown Terrorist is a startlingly prescient novel that drums with the cadences of city life; where fear invades individual lives, pushing one woman ever closer to breaking point.

Critic Reviews

" A true page-turner as well as a timely, pithy critique of celebrity culture and the politics of fearmongering." ( Publisher's Weekly starred review)

Excellent Expose of human behaviour

Tells many truths. Richard dishes society up as it really functions. A good listen.

A unique perspective and engaging plot

There really is no-one like Richard Flanagan. His reflections on the micro and macro aspects of Australian culture often make me stop, with an intake of breath, in sometimes horrified recognition. He does a wonderful job here; weaving the different perspectives on this issue seamlessly and the developing insights of the protagonist are deeply affecting. Humphrey Bower does a great job again with pacing, characterisation and accents.

Absolutely Brilliant

The story is so plausible. The way some media- types build compelling news from scraps of non-newsworthy hearsay and use the latest public fear to their advantage is so true.
The characters are so well drawn.
I listened to this book in one sitting, riveted by the way the threads of fate gradually ensnared the main character.
I will admit that the slow couple of paragraphs are the very beginning of the book almost lost me but I am so glad I didn't switch off.

Great book, but the reading?

This is great book, but the reading lets it down. The characters are sadly ruined by the reading.

Great take

Wonderful treatise of the gift of the gab in the modern world. Enough of it to keep wiping your derrière forever

Depressing

This story was about as entertaining and uplifting as reading a newspaper, full of tragedy and hysteria. It is a book for our times and examines the awful effect that the threat of terrorism can have on the general populace and the vulnerability of sex workers. No happy endings here.

Deeply Australian and disturbing

The opening in its poetic discord hooked me yet rapidly descended into a dark, crude commentary on Australian ignorance. Not an easy read but certainly an eye opener!

His best yet!

A grave reflection on how society works, summarised into a believable story. I love Richard Flanagan’s work.

Disappointing

Being RF, I expected more. It was a predictable potboiler story. The political barbs fall short of the mark. Listen to the later novels such as Narrow road to the deep north
