About this listen
Award-winning author Ursula Vernon, writing as T. Kingfisher, presents a terrifying tale of hidden worlds and monstrous creations…
When Mouse's dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be?
Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there's more—Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather's journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants…until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.
Alone in the woods with her dog, Mouse finds herself face to face with a series of impossible terrors—because sometimes the things that go bump in the night are real, and they're looking for you. And if she doesn't face them head on, she might not survive to tell the tale.

So creepy
Such a good story! I loved the characters (especially Bongo). Creepy and unsettling, I’ll be thinking about it for a long time!
I didn’t love the narration, but I could still listen to it,

Really engaging storytelling that lulls you into a false sense of security
The contrast between the narrator’s playful tone and the grim content worked really well. Like, I didn’t expect things to get that scary, but damn!

A twisted story.
T. Kingfisher's "The Twisted Ones" is a compelling foray into the horror genre that masterfully intertwines subtle frights with a crescendo of suspense that will have you gripping the edge of your bed. The author's skillful prose effortlessly draws readers into a story that is both moving and unexpected, boasting a well-maintained pace that hooks you from the first page and refuses to let go.
The novel shines a spotlight on its protagonist, whose deep and intricate personality is crafted with exceptional nuance. This main character is not only relatable but also deeply immersive, allowing readers to see through her eyes as the eerie tale unfolds. The supporting characters are not mere backdrops but are well-conceived companions who contribute significantly to the protagonist’s journey, enhancing her traits and the story’s depth.
Kingfisher excels in building a chilling narrative that cleverly plays with elements of the supernatural and the all-too-real, blending them into a seamless, eerie atmosphere. Moments of tension are skillfully placed to escalate the fear factor without overwhelming, making it a delightful read for those who appreciate horror that teases the psyche rather than assaulting it with gore.
The story's setting is another character in itself, painted vividly enough to make you glance nervously out of your own window, half-expecting to see something from the shadowy corners of Kingfisher’s imagination. The author's descriptions are evocative and rich, ensuring that the setting contributes as much to the suspense as the plot itself.
"The Twisted Ones" is highly recommended for anyone who harbors a penchant for horror. It’s a book that promises to entertain, terrify, and linger in the mind long after the last page has been turned. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the genre or a newcomer, this novel is sure to satisfy your horror tendencies with its perfect blend of pace, character development, and atmospheric tension.

A cozy folk thriller.
This story was a great read. The best description is cozy. It's supernatural but doesn't dwell on it. It's spooky but never tips into being scary (for a jaded horror veteran at least). The casual narrative tone and comfortable voice of the narrator create a gentle, slightly unerving experience that is thothoroughly enjoyed. That being said unless you are very new to the genre you won't have trouble sleeping after reading it.
