About this listen
When sisters Muna and Sakti wake up on the peaceful beach of the island of Janda Baik, they can’t remember anything, except that they are bound as only sisters can be. They have been cursed by an unknown enchanter, and slowly Sakti starts to fade away. The only hope of saving her is to go to distant Britain, where the Sorceress Royal has established an academy to train women in magic.
If Muna is to save her sister, she must learn to navigate high society and trick the English magicians into believing she is a magical prodigy. As she's drawn into their intrigues, she must uncover the secrets of her past and journey into a world with more magic than she had ever dreamed.

Great work!
I loved this. A different take on magic and a rich tapestry of non-Anglo magic and characters.

Enjoyable book but not Zen Cho's best
I've been listening to a lot of Zen cho lately and thought I'd try this book out, despite not having read book 1 of this series. It took awhile to get into because I thought the narrator wasn't a good fit. She has a perfectly pleasant and capable voice but does not represent young Malaysian characters well. The narrators for other of Zen's books were much better fits. Once I accepted the aural dissonance, I did become drawn into this magical world. Lovely to hear a bit more about Malaysian magic and folk lore. Personally I would've been happy to stay focused on that part of the world rather then sending the protagonists to England. The righting style is more reserved in this work than is usual for Zen. But by the end I was really invested in the characters and their blossoming lives.
