About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
In this bestselling audiobook read by the author, Gary Stevenson relives his time on the trading floor with raw honesty, gritty humour and true conviction.
An outrageous, white-knuckle journey to the dark heart of an intoxicating world - from someone who survived the trading game and then blew it all wide open
Ever since he was a kid, kicking broken footballs on the streets of East London in the shadow of Canary Wharf's skyscrapers, Gary wanted something better. Something a whole lot bigger.
Then he won a competition run by a bank: 'The Trading Game'. The prize: a golden ticket to a new life, as the youngest trader in the whole city. A place where you could make more money than you'd ever imagined. Where your colleagues are dysfunctional maths geniuses, overfed public schoolboys and borderline psychopaths, yet they start to feel like family. Where soon you're the bank's most profitable trader, dealing in nearly a trillion dollars. A day. Where you dream of numbers in your sleep - and then stop sleeping at all.
But what happens when winning starts to feel like losing? When the easiest way to make money is to bet on millions becoming poorer and poorer - and, as the economy starts slipping off a precipice, your own sanity starts slipping with it? You want to stop, but you can't. Because nobody ever leaves.
Would you stick, or quit? Even if it meant risking everything?
This is an outrageous, unvarnished, white-knuckle journey to the dark heart of an intoxicating world - from someone who survived the game and then blew it all wide open.

fascinating story told with humanity
I was expecting an exciting tale of nhigh earnings and crazy business dealings from a top trader, what I got instead was a brilliant story of an interesting life told with humanity and pain. Gary seems like a good human and he's got a way with a story that makes it really entertaining. he's quite poetic the way he writes, I reckon he should try his hand as a novelist!

One of the most engrossing books I’ve ever read
Gary is a proper genius
Not only mathematically or financially of course
He is also a master of story telling , of creative writing and arrangement.
His memory of his life (I’m assuming parts were made up since no one can possibly remember this much detail about every day of their lives) is incredible.
A thoroughly fun and funny experience.
Oh and did I mention he does all the accents too? The guy is beyond talented.

The story of a man who won it all but nearly lost his soul while doing so
This is not really a book about economics, it’s really about what it’s like to loose yourself.
I don’t think that Gary would argue with my opinion that as a younger man he was self absorbed, cocky and for some, a bit of a pain in the arse.
So on paper he was everything that City bank, or indeed any of the banking institutions were looking for.
Unfortunately his downfall was having a conscience, this is not a useful thing to have in the banking world.
As he gets richer financially he gets morally poorer, but to start with he strangely doesn’t get that 2+2=4.
The start of the book is kind of Wall Street esk, it’s very interesting and the competition involved is very compelling.
The characters are well written and you get a sence of the heady get rich or die trying environment, indeed it’s addictive.
And it’s this addiction to the game that is so well outlined.
But if you were one of the many people seeing the world going to hell at the time the stories of excess and greed can be difficult to stomach sometimes.
Indeed it’s not always easy to not dislike this very talented young man who seems to be just like those he despises.
However the story slowly goes down hill, and after a while you realise that this is a man desperately trying to not only hang onto who he is but to not loose his soul while doing so.
It’s also a warning about where the world is heading, one that like Gary, I doubt will be understood by most people until it’s too late.
But if you want a book that leaves you feeling that your money was well spent I would highly recommend it.
As for the author, well I finished up feeing that in the end he was a very human man with human frailties and I just wanted to ask
“Gary, are you OK”

Couldn’t stop listening
A great book outlining a very interesting period in Gary’s life while combining a darker underlying truth about the global economy and inequality. Great listen, couldn’t pause it

Good on ya, cobber!
Great yarn. The key theme of inequality and disadvantage really cut through. Some really funny moments. Thought provoking content about mental health. Wish the ending was that he married the wizard!
