About this listen
On Mars, the harsh climate could make any colonist turn to drugs to escape a dead-end existence. Especially when the drug is Can-D, which transports its users into the idyllic world of a Barbie-esque character named Perky Pat. When the mysterious Palmer Eldritch arrives with a new drug called Chew-Z, he offers a more addictive experience, one that might bring the user closer to God. But in a world where everyone is tripping, no promises can be taken at face value.
This Nebula Award nominee is one of Philip K. Dick's enduring classics, at once a deep character study, a dark mystery, and a tightrope walk along the edge of reality and illusion.

magnificent homage to H.P Lovecraft
Great narration
The story is already starting to move into the direction of Valis with a deep undercurrent of Gnostic mysticism
Feels very topical with the elements of global warming and solipsistic retreat into virtual reality

Not my cuppa
I enjoyed Ubik, but just can't with this one. Observations about imaginary worlds vs ugly realities (drug induced or not) are depressingly relevant, but the more dated aspects- technological predictions and subsequent cultural assumptions, cringey & unchallenged sexism, twee wordplay satirizing 50-60's marketing speak- made it harder for me to connect. Performance didn't help; falsetto female impressions are a pet hate, and the cartoonish Indian & German accents were painfully caricatured.
YMMV, but wading through the meandering private thoughts of boring, unlikeable and/or unpleasant people to reach the deeper themes just isn't my thing.

Not well suited for an audio book
Complex and interesting concepts but I found it very difficult to follow as an audio book. Perhaps others would find it easier. It needs close attention – more than I paid.
Great narration.
