About this listen

There are some secrets you just can’t bury.

A gripping Audible Original for fans of Jane Harper’s The Dry and Sarah Pearse’s The Sanatorium, The Teacher’s Lie is a psychological thriller set on the harsh and rugged South Australian coast, performed by Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, The Kids Are All Right).

It’s been two years since Anna Cartwright’s life fell apart. During her first school trip as a young teacher, a student went missing and was never found. Not only was her career ruined, she was also accused of having an affair with fellow teacher and prime suspect Graham. Facing questions from journalists, police and family, Anna said she didn’t know what happened. She was lying.

Now, Anna has returned to Australia. Her only hope is Land’s End Area School, an isolated concrete wasteland perched on the cliffs. The failing institution is so understaffed that it is the one place her history might remain hidden. But while the eccentric Headmistress seems welcoming, deputy-head Miss Baxter seems determined to expose her secrets.

With new lies spinning out of control, how long can Anna keep her secret hidden? And is she being haunted by her guilt or by something far more sinister?

Half as long would have done better

It could have been a good story, but too much repetitive description dragged it down. I ended up finishing this only because I was driving a long distance and had nothing else.

The characters and their behaviours here were so unbelievable, and no one who has ever worked as a teacher would buy the set up of that school. The few almost interesting characters were mostly ignored, and all of them were just service to the plot rather than individuals with real lives.

A heavier hand editing, more focus on the plot and a more believable set up at the school would have gone a long way to improving this.

The narration was disappointing too, though it was a relief that it didn’t succumb to the “wonder voice” trap that so much Aussie narration seems to fall in to. There were some odd pronunciation choices - sow said like sowing wheat when it was actually referring to a female pig for example. All the characters spoke in exactly the same way, though that wasn’t helped by the fact they were all written the same way.

OK

I liked the narrator, Mia has a distinctive voice, but for those who say it's an English accent, it's not, it's very Mia, who is Australian.

I got lost in the story. I don't really understand the ending. Where did Emily fit it? The interaction between Tori and Danny seemed to be more than was made out in the end. I listened to it all, but maybe I zoned out and missed it? Where did the other teachers fit in? How does anyone manage access to sleep in a school, no matter how remote? The handyman was always there, yet the school had no security lights etc etc. Who gets a job as a teacher and job shadows for 3 months? it was too far fetched. Anyway....

Good book with reasonable suspense

I enjoyed the book overall
Felt the characters and plot were left wanting. I hung in expecting some big reveals, twists etc, but the book meandered. Liked the sense of place with Australian culture.

very strange book

Book left a very strange aftertaste. Amazing narration, interesting listening to start with but a very strange end. Definitely not a book that I would want to listen again to.

Narrator was not good

The story was okay but the narration was terrible. It was more like she was reading a children’s book, so was distracting and I drifted off more than once listening too it.

Not the best

Found this quite long and boring with not much of a story - quite disappointing - won’t be rushing to listen to any others
